Whitland played host to Beddau in National League division one last Saturday, and after a bruising encounter, deservedly came out on top, winning the match by 12 points to five. No points were scored in the first half, with outside-half Aled Davies missing a penalty chance in very blustery conditions midway through the half. Indeed, Whitland must have felt a little hard done by not to have gone into the break with a lead, but the final pass, a few knock-ons and some stout defence by Beddau kept the Borderers out to leave the opening period pointless. The second half saw Whitland start the brighter, but after a move broke down midway into Beddau's half, the visitors took advantage to counter-attack and centre Nathan Walters went over for their only try of the match, which Brett Davey failed to convert. This sparked Whitland into raising their game, and when Beddau started to make mistakes and concede penalties, Aled Davies used the wind superbly well to kick four in the 20th, 23rd, 27th and 32nd minutes, to see the Borderers home by 12 points to 5. Whitland's pack was outstanding, and it was great to see club captain Phil Morgan come off the bench midway through the half - the first time he has donned the jersey this year. This weekend sees Whitland travel to the capital to face the students of UWIC. Man-of-the-match was Johnny Koloi, while referee was Hugh Banfield, of the WRU.
