The call has gone out to Pembrokeshire adventurers wanting to experience the thrill of a giant zip ride and help raise money for a new Angle lifeboat.

The 'Dangle for Angle' giant zip wire on Sunday, September 17, is being organised by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, as part of the City of Birmingham Tamar Class Lifeboat Appeal for Angle. The two year long appeal aims to raise £1m to fund a new Tamar class lifeboat for the village. There is already a Tamar class lifeboat at Tenby.

The 165-metre long 'slide of fear' will be fixed from the top of the newly-refurbished Fort Dunlop building, a famous landmark at Erdington, Birmingham, and those who brave the dizzy heights of the 10-storey building are promised an exhilarating zip through the air and an extreme and unique experience.

The RNLI's voluntary crew members risk their lives to help others in danger, and the charity relies on voluntary contributions to continue. An average of 15 holidaymakers from the Birmingham area are saved from the sea by the RNLI's lifeboats every year, so there has been a tradition of strong support from the city's population.

The event organisers are looking for groups or individuals aged 16-plus, who are up for the challenge, and are willing to raise £100 each for the RNLI. No experience is necessary, just a basic level of fitness. All the equipment and instruction will be provided on the day by trained professionals. Prizes will be given for the best fancy dress on the day, as well as to the person who raises the most in sponsorship for the appeal.

• So far over £60,000 has been raised for the Angle appeal. In addition to special events in the Birmingham area, there will be a star-studded rock concert at Carew Airfield on August 5, when among those taking to the stage with the Jones Gang - led by Kenny Jones, of The Small Faces - will be Coronation Street's Kym Marsh, who won fame with the group Hear'Say, Paul Young with Los Pacaminos, The Blims, Triquetra, Fables and the Fred Herring Band. Co-sponsors of the event, which will also raise money for The Small Faces All Children's Charity, are Texaco and Hyundai Cars UK.
