In the results of the Carmarthenshire National Milk Records competition for 2003, announced recently, the Halen herd of Holstein Friesians, of Messrs. Lowry, of Gilwen, Newcastle Emlyn, won the large herds competition, gaining most points on production and inspection.
They were also overall winners of the inspection part of the competition and were runners-up with both their youngstock and bull progeny got by Ivan Mark Tesk.
Most successful amongst the small herds were Alun and Carolyn Davies, of Caerlleon, Whitland and Carolyn's daughter, Sian.
At Caerlleon, the family run their 'Gaer' herd of pedigree Holsteins, their 'Quarry' Brown Swiss and the 'Starlight' Jerseys and it was Sian's Jerseys who came out on top with the Brown Swiss second and the Holsteins in third place.
With stock got by Hanoverhill Raider, Simon and Sian Davies, of Brynhyfryd, Crymych, won the bull progeny competition and female young stock sections and they were also successful on herd inspection and production and with their nominated cows and heifers.
Mr. Dyfrig Griffiths, who judged the competition with Mr. Ken Davies, commented that he was very impressed with all of the entries and particularly so on the quite remarkable quality of the young stock.
