On June 10, two local cyclists set out to cycle 1,000 from Land's End to John O'Groats in 14 days. They hoped that their efforts would raise over £3,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support but, at a celebration last Saturday in Tenby, they presented two local Macmillan committees with cheques totalling over £7,000. Ed Spankie, from Manorbier, only took up cycling two years ago, but he has since completed two major cycle challenges. Inspiration for the Land's End to John O'Groats ride came from an uncle who completed the ride a few years ago at age 70! Richard Harrison, from Tenby, started to raise money for cancer charities after the death of his mother, Edna, and mother-in-law, Marion Dale. His sporting endurance achievements include swimming from Tenby to Caldey and back again, as well as running 19 marathons. These led to triathlons where he found he was losing time on the cycle leg - so needed extra training! The third member of the team was Ray Harrison, recently retired father of Richard. Ray drove the support van from Land's End to John O'Groats and provided vital support throughout the journey. Ray has been involved with Lions International charity fund-raising for many years and was only too happy to volunteer for the worthy cause. Ed and Richard trained hard, in all weathers, logging their progress from mid-January. The diary entry of May 21 records: "This week's log is noteworthy as we have now gone through 2,000 miles of training. The first 1,000 took 13 weeks the second 1,000 took six weeks." Ed's diary account of the trip can be found on http: //http://www.bike1000.co.uk/">www.bike1000.co.uk/. It makes good reading, picking out the highs and lows of the trip, including meeting the current record holder for the trip, Gethin Butler, who completed the trip in one day 20 hours and four minutes! Richard and Ed acknowledge their debt to not only indispensable Ray Harrison, but to their wives Linzi and Lesley, both teachers at Tenby Infants School, who supported them wholeheartedly, despite severe disruptions to both families' routines. They also thank Wick Van Centre, of Bridgend, for their generosity in supplying their vehicle and, very importantly, the support of their work colleagues, customers and suppliers - Richard's, at The Marshall Group, of Rhyl, importers of leisure products, and Consort Equipment Products, of Milford Haven, where Ed is managing director, for their encouragement and generous support. They also thank all their other kind supporters for their generosity. The team chose Macmillan Cancer Support because they had all lost members of their families to cancer and had received support from Macmillan. Whilst fund-raising, the team came across many other people whose families and friends had benefited from Macmillan's excellent services. Chairman of both Macmillan's Saundersfoot, Tenby and District committee and the Pembrokeshire committee, Lady Meyrick, expresses gratitude to Richard, Ed and Ray, and to all other supporters of this cause, all monies of which will be spent in South West Wales.
