Leaders Carew maintained pole position at the top of division one of the Pembrokeshire League with a seven wicket win over Cresselly.

Batting first in this derby clash, Cresselly suffered an early setback when opener Julian Arthur was removed in the first over by Carew's Darren Thomas.

However Richard Harris' controlled 44, backed up by good knocks from Paul Luke (13), Phil Williams (12) and Lyn Richards, helped them to 117.

Thomas ended with 17 for 2 but pick of the bowlers was Aled Davies who took four for 29. Rob Scourfield also took 3 for 30 and James Owen picked up the other wicket.

Cresselly's total was never really going to trouble the league leaders with Ian Sefton (37) and Nick Scourfield (34) putting on 71 for the fall of the first wicket. Adam Chandler carried his bat for 18, but the inaccuracy of the Cresselly bowl attack proved the clincher with 35 extras helping Carew to 123 for 3 and victory.

Newly promoted Whitland are still struggling to find their form in the upper ranks, slumping to defeat at the hands of reigning league champions Lamphey.

With opener Dave Lovell in top batting form, the Lamphey skipper leading the way with a fine 69, the villagers amassed 200 for 8 aided by good knocks from Craig Nutty (37) Daniel Sutton (24), Mark Yea (21) and Brian Hall (11) and declared .

Mark Lee, Paul Davies and skipper Paul Webb took two wickets each for Whitland.

David Lee (12), Paul Davies (13), Peter Wright (21), Matthew Davies (16) Mike Phillips (14) and H. Bevan (10) kept the scoreboard ticking over, but it was never going to be enough against the bowling of Tim Haggar (15 for 4), Lamphey dismissing them for 110 with eight overs to spare.

Haverfordwest kept up the challenge in third spot with a narrow win over Narberth.

There was little more that the width of a cigarette paper between the two teams going into the last over with Narberth chasing the Town's meagre 138 all out, but Adrian Griffiths only needed one ball to claim the scalp of battling Geoff Martin to leave the homesters just seven runs short of victory.

Adrian Phillips top scored for the Town with Phil Sutton chipping in a useful 30 and Jonathan Twigg and Karl Rhead also making it to double figures until the spin bowling of Matthew Johns (26 for 5) took its toll.

Narberth struggled against the bowling of Paul Thomas (32 for 4) and looked out of it on 110 for nine, but Martin dug his heels in, top scoring with 28 to set up a nail-biting climax aided by 24 from Ian Hughes, 14 from Dave Johns and 12 not out from tailender Richard Howell.

Lawrenny also kept the pressure on the top three with a comfortable win over Pembroke.

Taking first strike Lawrenny cruised to 200 for nine with Ian Jenkins blasting off three sixes and four fours in a controlled 67.

Andrew Cole (Senior) also clocked up a half century which included a six and eight fours and James Buckle stroked his way to 38.

Pick of the Pembroke bowlers was Stewart Longhurst with 26 for 4.

Openers Barry Evans (22) and Spencer Harries (16) got Pembroke off to a solid start but Simon Cole (20 for 3) and Buckle (37 for 4) played havoc with the order and only Chris Thomas (16) and Mark Fraser (21) were the only others able to make double figures as Pembroke were shut out on 102.

Burton picked up their first win of the season with a 28 run victory over Folly Farm Kilgetty.

Twenty-nine runs apiece from James Scale and Rob Neale, plus 19 from Gareth Virgo, 10 from S Jones, 14 from John Griffiths and 16 from K. Roberts saw Burton creep to 143 all out.

Pic of the Kilgetty attack was veteran Barry Woods whose 12 over spell included four maidens and five wickets for just 30 runs. Son Mark also picked up two wickets, as did Cliff James.

Kilgetty got off to a shaky start before Nick Joseph and Geraint Davies steadied the ship with 24 and 14 respectively. Phil Jones helped things along as he carried his bat for 55 but Chris Murray (36 for 3), Steve Jones (25 for 4) and Jo Scale (23 for 2) did just enough, with Scale claiming the final wicket with Kilgetty on 115.

Manorbier settle for draw

On a surprisingly cold afternoon Manorbier took on Crymych up in the Preselis in their Division Four encounter. Crymych, batting first, raced to 90 without loss in the first 20 overs and looked well set for a huge total. However Manorbier drew inspiration from Trevor Staley's sharp return catch to dismiss Tudor Harries (40). Fellow opener B. Stanford (41) who looked very dangerous was bowled soon after by Jeremy Smith to put a brake on Crymych's run gathering.

Phil Kidney's second spell proved destructive taking four wickets in three overs, but Crymych were still able to post a total of 152 for nine wickets in their 40 overs.

In response Manorbier got off to a slow start - Andrew Nally and Keith May pegged back by some accurate and effective bowling from the experienced John Williams. May went on to graft 32 runs, but a steady fall of wickets the other end kept Manorbier behind in the run chase - eventually having to settle for a draw at 127 for 8. The other batsmen to reach double figures were Smith (20), Mike May (15), Phil Lawrence (13) and Andrew Nally (10).
