Matthew Maynard might be 38 but he still moves with the grace and suppleness of someone ten years younger.

At Cresselly on Sunday, he held the large crowd spellbound with his superb strokeplay to all parts of the grounds playing for Glamorgan against Cresselly, in the first of two Twenty 20 matches.

In the first Twenty 20 match, Glamorgan scored 242 for four. Maynard opened the batting for Glamorgan with Daniel Cherry and hit 16 sixes and nine fours to reach 160 not out in a faultless batting display.

He caressed the ball to and over the boundary with his impeccable technique and timing and appears to have half a dozen different shots for the same ball, making it almost impossible for bowlers to decide where to bowl to him.

His innings will be talked about for years by anyone who was there and the highlight was a reverse sweep for six over the bank at the Cresselly ground, which looked a picture on the day.

Daniel Cherry provided support with an innings of 42 against his former team mates at Cresselly.

Cresselly batted well to score 161 for two in reply, with opener Julian Arthur scoring 55 with nine fours and two sixes, before being bowled by Daniel Cherry.

He received support from Richard Harris with a fluent 36 and his innings came to an end with a fine piece of stumping by Tenby born actor Charles Dale, guesting for Glamorgan, off the spin bowling of Matthew Maynard.

Although the Glamorgan total was beyond the reach of the Cresselly batsmen, the crowd continued to be entertained by the batting of Simon Cole and Adam Chandler, with undefeated knocks of 31 and 33 respectively.

Cresselly gained revenge in the second match to win by five wickets. A brilliant innings of 70 by opener Ryan Lewis paved the way for Cresselly to reach 166 for five, to pass Glamorgan's total of 162 for seven, with some help from Phil Williams who scored 29 not out, supplemented by 20 from Simon Cole and 18 by Neilson Cole.

Earlier, Adam Harrison top scored for the Glamorgan Dragons with 60 and Robert Croft scored a typically pugnacious innings of 54 with five sixes.

Speaking after the match Robert Croft said: "Thanks to both teams and for the Glamorgan players for coming along, as we do not get too many days off. Thanks also to Charles Dale who has to drive back to Harrogate for some filming tomorrow.

"We play quite a lot of these types of matches, but rarely do we see a crowd of this size or an event organised in such a professional manner.

"It has been a great day, one that we will never forget and the welcome and hospitality has been tremendous.

"Thanks to all of the spectators who have turned up. It has been fantastic. It is great being a cricketer out in the middle, but you do not half get a buzz when you have a crowd around the ground who love their cricket.

"We as a Glamorgan cricket team are very proud of the fact that we are Welsh and that encompasses the fact that we need people from this neck of the woods playing more and more for Glamorgan.

"Good luck to everyone who plays the game down this way and let us hope that Glamorgan have a successful season."

Daniel Cherry enjoyed his return to his home ground. He said: "It has been a fantastic day. The support just shows what a great day it was, the weather was great, the organisation was great and it was great for the Glamorgan players to come down to show what they could do. Mat Maynard was simply superb and as a former Cresselly player, it was a delight to be involved in such an historic day."

Cresselly chairman Glyn Cole said: "It has been a superb day with great cricket, terrific weather and the support from cricket followers throughout the county has been very much appreciated together with that from the sponsors and 130 guests who enjoyed the hospitality arrangements in the marquee.

"Everyone at the Cresselly club has worked hard to make the day a success and we will be able to make a substantial donation to Glamorgan's Sophia Gardens Ground Appeal Fund."

There was only one real candidate the Man of the Match and Matthew Maynard will enjoy a two-day cruising break on the sunshine island of Mallorca, sponsored by Martin and Mair Arthur, of Charter Mallorca.
