Sir,
In view of the publicity about NHS nursing staff neglecting patients in hospital, I feel I must relate my own recent experiences.
In December last, I went to the Saundersfoot Surgery and was told I needed to go to hospital immediately and must wait for an ambulance to go to Withybush. There was some delay, during which the nursing staff were kind, caring and helpful, as were the ambulance staff. Following this, I was in the Assessment Ward, then the Coronary Care Unit and finally Ward 8, for a total of seven days.
Whilst appreciating the kindness and patience with which I myself, was treated, I listened to the tone of voice of nurses, carers and, indeed, all staff dealing with other patients. At all times they were kind, interested and above all, patient. One 'difficult' lady, who couldn't cope, was helped, with compassion, several times a day to eat and drink and become comfortable.
Nowhere did I see evidence of neglect or unkindness. May I say thank you to all who helped me including, of course, the excellent doctors.
Elizabeth J. Watts,
Saundersfoot.
