A motorist who drove his vehicle dangerously through a busy street in Pembroke, colliding with two vehicles, has been given a suspended jail sentence.

Thirty-two-year-old Stuart Thompson, of The Terrace, The Dockyard, Pembroke Dock, pleaded guilty to driving his Citroen Picasso on Westgate Hill and Main Street, when he appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan told the court that on December 28, Mr. Thompson overtook two motorists dangerously in his vehicle.

“The witnesses, a husband and wife in a VW Golf, described Mr. Thompson as coming up behind them at speed, before undertaking on a one-way street, and colliding with a parked vehicle that had its hazard lights on, and driving off.

“Mr. Thompson had already been witnessed carrying out a bad manoeuvre, when he rammed into the side of a Ford Focus after mounting a kerb to try and get past the car,” continued Ms Morgan.

The car in question was written-off due to the collision, the court heard.

Magistrates were also shown CCTV footage of the second incident involving Mr. Thompson on Pembroke Main Street.

Defence solicitor Mike Kelleher said that his client hadn’t long passed his driving test and was only insured four days before the incident.

“He panicked having had a collision and realises that he should have stopped.

“It was inexperience followed by panic and not intentional. It is fortuitous that there were no injuries and Mr. Thompson is very regretful and also aware that he could be sent to prison today.

Magistrates gave Mr. Thompson 15 weeks custody, suspended for 24 months, with 40 hours of unpaid work to be carried out.

He was banned from driving for 18 months, and ordered to pay a total of £165 in costs.
