The three-day Pembrokeshire Agricultural Show is back - and that's official.

After a lapse in 2001, due to DEFRA restrictions, last week's show was rated equal to any similar event held in the 220-year history of the society.

The weather was such that it prevented farmers making any progress with the harvest and it also distracted so many holidaymakers to the area from settling for days on the beaches. The end result being a truly bumper show that left all the officials beaming with delight after they had found parking spaces for almost 12,000 cars on each of the three days!

Secretary Barry Vaughan was well pleased with the overall attendance and confirmed that this attraction must surely now continue to go from strength to strength in the coming years.

Well over 1,150 entries were forward in the horse and pony classes, with Ron and Debbie Thomas taking supreme on Thursday with their five-year-old bay pony, Oldcourt Balailika, splendidly ridden by Gemma James.

Highlights of the cattle section were the individual supreme awards and team of five challenge in both beef and dairy classes.

Hefin Wilson was given best amongst the milkers with his Holstein second calver, Dalesend Storm Maude, beating newcomers Philip and Sharon Williams with their Ayrshire heifer, Parcgwyn Leo Eira 9.

The inter-breed production and inspection winner was an entry from Simon and Sian Davies, of Crymych, and the winning team of five were the Holsteins over the Dairy Shorthorns.

The young Longhorn bull, the home bred Linton Beowulfe, was selected supreme amongst the beef cattle entries over George and Ionwy Thorne's winning Hereford, Costhorpe 1 Trailblazer, and this time the team award was given to the Limousins over the Welsh Blacks.

Heading the 250 sheep entries for both individual and group awards were Suffolk breeders Russell and Rosemary Jones with the pedigree Welsh Mountain, from Russell Davies in reserve.

In a free prize draw at the Stockmen's restaurant, the winner of a weekend for two in Blackpool was Pat O'Gready, of Maes y Gaer, Llanybydder, and a gallon bottle of whisky was won by Ruby Owen, Ash Park, Kilgetty.
