Organised by Narberth and District Ladies Probus Club, members of Pembroke Ladies and Men’s Probus Clubs plus Saundersfoot Men’s Probus Club and several guests joined a coach trip to the Royal Mint at Llantrisant recently.
Starting with the Mint’s ‘Copper Buffet’ in the Isaac Newton Suite, members then had time to view the exhibition and shop before joining the pre-booked tour which began with a short film tracing the Mint’s history from the Alfred the Great Penny c.880AD.
Members viewed the gold sovereign of Henry Vll (1485-1509) which was to become one of the most famous coins the world has ever seen, followed by a selection of coins from around the world, all made at our Royal Mint.
From a showcase of the engraver’s art of design and craftsmanship, members moved on to the box of Master Weights from 1774, which has three separate locks to reflect the shared responsibility of Mint officials down the centuries.
In another mini cinema, a spectacular close-up view was enjoyed of how coins are made, before moving into the actual factory area where viewed, from behind security glass, were millions of new pound coins being minted.
Other highlights included the 1933 penny which is believed to be very rare, although no detailed records were kept so there is always a chance one may turn up!
Another rarity is the Edward Vlll sovereign which was never issued due to the abdication, although the pattern coins had been prepared so are now very rare.
The Mint has some excellent ‘fun-learning’ activities so is a great place to take children, good catering facilities and beautifully maintained grounds to enjoy refreshments on fine days.
Grateful thanks are due to Royal Mint staff for arranging the visit and buffet, and Evans Coaches of Milford Haven, plus driver Sue, for a very comfortable journey.
The next meeting of Narberth and District Ladies Probus Club is on Friday, October 6, at Plas Hyfred Hotel, at 11 for 11.30 am, when the speaker will be Rev. Canon Brian Witt on ‘The Handsome Vicar’.
Guests and new members will be made most welcome for this luncheon meeting.
