Pembrokeshire has won another top coaching award. A month after being named the LTA's local authority of the year for tennis coaching, Pembrokeshire has been awarded the Coaches Association of the Year title by the Cricket Board of Wales. The award is in recognition of the partnership between the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches and Sport Pembrokeshire - Pembrokeshire County Council's sports development team. The partnership has resulted in exceptionally high numbers of youngsters achieving Dragon Awards based on a busy coach education programme. Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches will be presented with a Coaching Bag, funded by Sky Sports, during the Glamorgan CCC v Gloucestershire fixture at Sophia Gardens on September 21. Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member responsible for sport, said: "This is turning into quite a summer of sports awards for the county. Hot on the heels of our national tennis award, it is particularly pleasing to receive this prestigious award for cricket - our county's premier summer sport. "Both in terms of numbers playing and standards achieved, junior cricket development in Pembrokeshire is leading the way. "Only last week the Sageston School Kwik Cricket Team made it into the finals of the UK Schools Cricket Competition - a remarkable feat - and I congratulate them on their achievement." John Deason, manager of Sport Pembrokeshire, said the award recognised the hard work of a dedicated band of volunteer cricket coaches who week, in week out, delivered good quality coaching and competitive matches for the youngsters. "We are especially pleased with the healthy links being established between the county's cricket clubs and their local schools," he said. Ray Kane, of the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches, said the award was a tremendous boost to the association. "We are delighted with our partnership with Sport Pembrokeshire, which has resulted in this year's employment of a cricket development officer, Ben Field. Clearly the combination of a strong coaches association and a supportive sports development team is a winning formula."
