Division One

The curtain came down on the Antur Insurance Pembroke County Cricket League in dramatic fashion as Cresselly's eight wicket win away to Llangwm snatched the title from Carew, who failed to overtake the Whitland score of 133-9 as they were bowled out for 126 in the last over of the match.

The win at Llangwm has given Cresselly the Division One championship for the first time since 1988 in Simon Cole's first season as captain and during the year that Roly Edwards became chairman of the club for the first time.

Llangwm were bowled out for 176, a total which owed much to an attacking innings of 69no by Luke Brock who hit four sixes and six fours. Lyn Rees scored 25 and Chris Inward 20 as Stefan Jenkins took 3-17 in 12 tight overs and Lyn Richards 3-53.

In reply an outstanding first wicket partnership of 140 by Phil Williams with 84no and Andrew Harris set up the Cresselly winning total of 178-2.

Both openers have had a great season and the dashing Harris hit two sixes and seven fours in his innings and made to measure opener Phil Williams found the boundary 11 times and crossed it twice.

At Carew the visitors Whitland had to fight back from being 14-5 to reach the tea time score of 133-9.

David Lee led the recovery in a fighting innings of 60no supported by Kevin Pearce with 18 and later by Paul Webb with 12 and Mark Lee with 14 in significant total building partnerships.

Swing bowler Ian Sefton caused havoc early on with his 4-13 spell and had overs left in the bank at the close of the Whitland innings.

Phone lines were hot between Carew and Llangwm and the consensus view by 95% of the people following the exciting two horse race for the title was that Carew would win comfortably.

Predictions looked to be correct when Nick Scourfield and Ian Sefton put on 42 for the first wicket before Scourfield was trapped leg before wicket by Matthew Davies. It was the signal for Whitland skipper Mark Lee to play a significant role with the ball from the gardens end.

The Carew batsmen found it difficult to play him and score runs at the same time, with the exception of the enigmatic Ian Sefton who was batting like a dream.

When experienced spinner Paul Webb came into the attack this situation changed as the batsmen were made to struggle at both ends. When Sefton who scored a delightful 56 tried to slash a wide ball outside off stump from Paul Webb with leaden feet he hit the ball straight down the throat of Paul Davies at gulley. It triggered a sensational batting collapse and the only other batsmen in double figures were Phil Jones with 14 and Rob Scourfield with 11. Both Mark Lee and Paul Webb finished with a return of 4-26 to give Whitland victory by seven runs and to push Carew into second place in the table.

The lowest totals of the day in Division One were at St Ishmaels where Tish could only manage a total of 104-5 in 45 overs with Stewart Kimpton 53no. Jamie Phelps took 2-22 for the visitors Hook who won by five wickets after 29 overs with Mick Haltam 32no and Martyn Rees 26no.

All rounder Andrew Williams took 4-46.

In reply a third wicket partnership of 147 by Danny Potter and Stephen Phillips steered Harfat to a seven wickets win with Potter hitting ten fours in an excellent innings of 103no and Stephen Phillips scored 60 before being bowled by Henry Durrant.

Lawrenny reached 135 before being bowled out by the visitors Narberth. Steve Lewis scored 33 and James Buckle 30 as all rounder Wayne Howells took 5-34 and left arm seamer Ian Hughes 3-31.

Excellent bowling and fielding by Lawrenny resulted in the visitors being dismissed for 109. Skipper Richard Adams scored 26 and Kial Keane 20.
