Division One
Somewhat surprisingly, three centuries were scored by Division One batsmen in the first innings on the first day of the 2009 Pembrokeshire League season, but only one resulted in a win for the batsman's team.
That was at Carew where a brilliant 100 exactly by Carew all-rounder Simon Wood set up a total of 204 for 6, enabling Carew skipper Rob Scourfield to declare with two overs of the innings remaining.
Opener Nick Scourfield with 48 helped Wood add 86 for the third wicket and Tim Hicks with 39, including three sixes, added 67 with Wood for the fifth wicket.
Altogether Wood hit three sixes and nine fours as the Hook bowlers toiled, with the exception of Jamie Phelps, who took 3 for 26 and Ross Martin who took 2 for 36.
In reply, Hook were dismissed for 96, despite the efforts of Ross Martin with 39.
Three Carew bowlers picked up three wickets apiece. Skipper Rob Scourfield took 3 for 15, Tim Hicks 3 for 19 and teenager Rhys Davies 3 for 36.
Lawrenny opener Andrew Cole scored 103 in a Lawrenny total of 184 for 7. Apart from Ian Jenkins with 46, batsmen came and went at the other end, but Cole stuck it out until the penultimate over before he was bowled by Chris Inward after hitting one six and 13 fours.
Inward and Andrew Brock each two wickets for the visitors Llangwm, who were held to 112 for 7 in reply and missed a chance to get extra batting points in the last five or six overs when 12 more runs could have given the visitors three more points.
Luke Brock held things together for Llangwm with 57, including two sixes and four fours.
For Lawrenny, there were two wickets each for Steve Lewis and Richard Prout on his Lawrenny debut.
Cresselly opener Phil Williams reached 101 not out at Haverfordwest after hitting three sixes and nine fours.
Newcomer James Venables supported with 27 and Julian Arthur had a brisk 23 as the visitors scored 182 for 7.
All-rounder Stephen Phillips and spinner Clive Tucker each took 2 for 37.
The Town made a good start with an opening partnership of 64 between Danny Potter and Richard James.
In his innings of 49, Potter hit one six and eight fours, James batted more sedately at the other end for 18 and later there were contributions of 31 not out from Phil Kirkby, 28 by Karl Rhead and 20 by Stephen Phillips as the Town settled for a draw on 166 for 6.
Richard Harris and Ryan Lewis both took two wickets for the visitors.
Neyland reached a total of 131 for 8 at home to Narberth, with Andrew Miller top scoring on 45, backed up by Nick Kooman with 24.
Narberth spinner Mathew Johns took 3 for 35, Ben Hughes 2 for 18 and Ian Hughes 2 for 46.
The visitors made a good start, with opener Richard Adams scoring 44 and Michael Scale 25, before both fell to Andrew Miller, but no one else reached double figures, apart from Mathew Johns, who showed his value to the side with a steadfast innings of 22 not out in a Narberth total of 114 for 8.
Andrew Miller had a good all round match and took 4 for 24, supported by Scott John with 3 for 13.
Division Two
On their return to Division Two, Cresselly Seconds raised a few eyebrows following their seven wickets win at home to Haverfordwest Seconds.
The visitors accumulated 173 for 5, with the main contributors being John Tooze with 58 not out, Richard Scriven with 52 not out and Julian James with 29.
Teenager Sam Harts took 3 for 18 and Sion Jenkins took 2 for 24 in 12 overs.
Rhydian Rees paved the way for the Cresselly win in his innings of 60, including nine fours, Nick Davies had a quickfire 41 with three sixes and two fours and Neil Williams chipped in with 37.
Defending champions Carew Seconds got off to an ideal start with a comprehensive away win at Burton who were bowled out for 85 chasing a Carew Seconds total of 174 for 4.
Left-handed opener Barry Evans scored 70 for Carew with three sixes and five fours and Aled Griffiths had an attacking innings of 85 with 10 fours. No other batsman reached double figures.
Darren Thomas destroyed the Burton batting line-up with a devastating spell of 7 for 25 and the Burton total was boosted from 55 for 9 to 85 all out following an undefeated knock of 25 by the experienced Brian Griffiths.
There was no play at Saundersfoot or at Johnston where Fishguard and Pembroke were the respective visitors.
Stackpole were bowled out for 43 chasing a massive Herbrandston total of 244 for 4.
Division Three
Narberth Seconds are one of three teams on top of the table with 27 points after their four wickets win at home to Crymych, who were dismissed for 74. Rob Nicholas top scored for the visitors with 23, as spinner Nick Evans took 5 for 13, backed up by Richard Howell with 3 for 9 and Brynley Toms with 2 for 21.
Narberth batsmen also found runs difficult, but Mike Williams threw caution to the wind in his breezy innings of 34 not out and survived three chances to take his team to a winning total of 77 for 6.
There were two wickets each for Dai Jenkins and Eurig Lewis.
In a low scoring match at Pembroke Dock, the Dock batted first and were forced to defend a total of 69 all out as Tom Davies took 4 for 23.
However Jason Coles with 5 for 15 played a big part in the Dock winning by 10 runs as the home team Camrose and Spittal were bowled out for 59.
Grant Cole with 29 and Robert Mathias with 19 helped Lamphey recover from 18 for 5 to reach 79 all out at Llanrhian as Mathew Bennett took 3 for 17 and Simon Ellison took 3 for 9.
Mathew Bennett was run out for 36, but set up the five wickets win for Llanrhian. Spinner Hywel Gibbs took 4 for 27 for the visitors.
Whitland Seconds were unable to play their match at St. Ishmaels and there was no play either in the match between Hundleton and Llechryd.
Division Four
Pembroke Seconds are top of Division Four after a comprehensive home win over Johnston Seconds, who were bowled out for 97 chasing a Pembroke total of 172 for 5.
Paul White, on his return to the Pembroke club, top scored with 61, supported by Phillip Hay with 58 and Sean Powell with 20.
Powell was also on form with the ball, taking 3 for 2. Two experienced campaigners Nigel Phillips and Chris Thomas took 2 for 14 and 3 for 1,respectively.
Another well known player, Steve James, top scored for the visitors with 41.
Batting first at Llangwm, the visitors, Lawrenny Seconds were held for a total of 82 for 9. Phil Cole was the leading contributor with 43, an innings which included two sixes and four fours.
Jonathan Brock did the damage for Llangwm Seconds with 5 for 7, supported by Rhys Morgan with 2 for 10.
The home team were made to fight for their three wickets win as John Fuller took 3 for 12 and Owen Williams 2 for 7. Jo Jo Francis with 19 and David Richards with 18 steered Llangwm Seconds to victory as the home team reached 84 for 7.
Kilgetty's match away to Hook Seconds could not be played.
Division Five
Whitland Thirds were bundled out for 65 away to Carew Thirds despite the efforts of Peter Wright with 18.
Joel Read took 3 for 15, Kerry Waters 2 for 9, Oliver Cole 2 for 4 and Luke Hicks 2 for 19.
Carew Thirds won by nine wickets after 16 overs. Haydn Shapcott was 29 not out and Lewis Hicks 18 not out.
No play was possible in the matches involving St. Florence and Cresselly Thirds.
Division Six
No play was possible in the matches involving Narberth Thirds, Lamphey Seconds, Kilgetty Seconds and Hundleton Seconds.
