Division One
Neyland continue to lead the Division One table of the Antur Insurance Services Pembroke County Cricket League after getting the better of a drawn match at Whitland. Neyland opener Paul Murray had a superb innings of 122 including three sixes and 14 fours which ended when he was caught by Kevin Pearce off the bowling of Bobby Webb. Neyland had been in some trouble early on but Murray was assisted by Henry Durant in a sixth wicket partnership of 101 before Durant was dismissed when he was bowled by Whitland skipper Mark Lee for 31. Bobby Webb was the main wicket taker for Whitland with four for 53 and his father Paul took out the lower order with a three for 34 spell. The Whitland innings lacked momentum and eventually the Whitland team settled for a draw. Bobby Webb was also the batting hero at the end of the Whitland innings as he played out the last over from spinner Gary Lloyd as the Whitland innings closed on a total of 109 for eight. Paul Davies scored 39, Iestyn Scourfield 27 and Jonathan Thomas 17. Had Bobby Webb been dismissed Whitland would have been bowled out as all rounder Mathew Davies was unable to bat after injuring a knee. For Neyland spinner Gary Lloyd took three for 21 and Patrick Hannon two for 17. The big four of St Ishmaels, Haverfordwest, Carew and Cresselly are not far behind Neyland and Tish kept up the pressure with a comprehensive seven wickets win away to Narberth. After James Salter and Andrew Palmer had made the early breakthrough, wickets fell at regular intervals to Andrew Williams who took five for 27. James Salter finished with a return of two for seven and Andrew Palmer took two for 11. Tom Richards with 18 and Ian Hughes with 20 restored some stability after openers Marc Hughes and Richards were out cheaply and Ben Quartermaine was the other batsman in double figures with 11. Although two Tish wickets fell with the total on 17, opener Andrew Salter with 31and Andrew Williams with 26 not out steered the visitors to a winning total of 81 for three. Cresselly had a six wickets win at home to Burton who were held to a total of 163 for four. In an unbroken partnership for the fifth wicket, James Venables and Martin James plundered runs from the closing orders to boost the Burton total. James Venables batted really well for his 88 not out from 115 deliveries and hit four sixes together with six fours. Earlier Gareth Bevan scored 18 with Chris Campbell and Jonathan Venables both scoring 16. Adam Chandler had an attacking innings of 81 not out from 72 deliveries with four sixes and nine fours to set up the Cresselly win. Julian Arthur scored 28 before he was bowled by John Scale but Damian Arthur joined Chandler in a productive fourth wicket partnership of 67 before he was bowled by Jonathan Venables for 23. Haverfordwest scored 146 for eight in their away match at Llangwm. It was left to town skipper Nick Dyer to score 38 not out at a run a ball to give the total a late boost after Chris Inward had troubled all of the Haverfordwest batsmen in his three for 39 spell Earlier Danny Potter scored 27 before being bowled by Andrew Brock, Stephen Phillips scored 19 and David Davies 17. Llangwm were bowled out for 94 in reply. David Davies did the early damage with three for 25 and then all rounder Phil Kirkby took five for five in his short spell. Jonathan Twigg top scored for Llangwm with 18 and Chris Inward scored 17. Lawrenny were bowled out for 109 away to Carew. Opening batsman Simon Cole scored 28 with five fours before falling to a catch by Wayne Cannon off the bowling of Robert Scourfield. James Buckle scored 16 and Lawrenny skipper Steve Lewis scored a brisk 27 with two sixes and two fours before falling to a brilliant one handed boundary catch by Tim Hicks off the bowling of young leg spinner Ceri Brace. Hugh Griffiths was the only other batsman in double figures with 13. Tim Hicks bowled well and ended with five for 24, skipper Robert Scourfield took two for 18 and Ceri Brace had an encouraging seven over spell during which he took two for 18. Although Nick Scourfield was caught by James Phillips off the bowling of Robert Williams for 14 and Wayne Cannon fell for 11, opener Brian Hall held things together in his knock of 42 with seven fours before being trapped leg before wicket by Steve Lewis. The Carew total kept ticking along and Simon Wood with 22 not out and Phil Jones with 14 not out gave Carew a seven wickets win during the 29th over.
Division Two
Saundersfoot are in second place of Division Two following a convincing win away to Llanrhian who were dismissed for 58 in reply to a Saundersfoot total of 120 all out. Five Saundersfoot batsmen got in but got out before reaching 50. The stylish Paul Mansbridge led the way with 24, David Parcell scored 21, Steve Cole 20 with both Steve Cook and Simon Stanford reaching 19. The reliable David Hamilton took three for 27, Mathew Bennett three for 18 and Chris Cousins two for 21. Mathew Bennett scored 15 and Dafydd Charles batting at number ten, 11 not out but no other Llanrhian batsman reached double figures as Kevin Sykes took six for 14 in 12 tight overs. David Parcell provided ideal support with three for 16. Pembroke's batsmen were in top form in their home match against Fishguard who were bowled out for exactly 100 in reply to a Pembroke total of 205 all out. Although the outfield was a bit slow following the overnight rain Daniel Scourfield found the boundary eight times and cleared it twice in an excellent innings of 82, opener Phil Hay scored 32 and other support came from Gwyn Griffiths with 27 and skipper Kevin Jenkins with 20. For the visitors Paul Davies took four for 44, Ben Watson four for 45 and Mathew Morgan took two for 14. Openers David Haynes with 31 and Jonathan Strawbridge with 20 gave the visitors a good start in reply but apart from Rob Cousins with 22, the remaining batsmen succumbed to Nigel Phillips who took six for 22 with his accurate off spin bowling and Gwyn Griffiths who took two for four. Following an overnight thunderstorm, the Llechryd batsmen found run scoring difficult against Carew Seconds. Llechryd skipper Steve Smith scored 37not out, Ollie Roberts backed up with 27 and Steve Curran with 20 but Llechryd were held to 123 for five. Nick Cope took two for 23 for the visitors and Aled Davies one for 19 from 12 overs. Carew grafted hard and eventually won by six wickets. Gerald Hicks batting at number three was 37 not out and skipper Martin Scourfield made sure of a Carew victory in his innings of 37 after opener Adrian Harris had scored 18. In other Division Two matches Haverfordwest Seconds could only reach 118 for six chasing a Hook total of 181 for eight and Herbrandston lost at home to Division Two leaders Johnston.
Division Three
Kilgetty cricketers were denied a league match for the second Saturday on the trot because of a wet outfield. Stackpole continued their winning start to the season with an eight wickets win over Hundleton who were bowled out for 92 as Chris Gibbs took four for 19. John Tysoe top scored for Hundleton with 31. Josh Davies scored an undefeated 67 as Stackpole reached 95 for two. Cresselly are in second place following their eight wickets win away to Burton Seconds. Tom Pellow top scored for the home team with 28 as left arm seamer Mathew Lewis took four for 23. Rhydian Rees led the run chase with a splendid innings of 56 not out and Dean Hayes was the pick of the Burton bowlers with two for 15. Whitland Seconds won by 35 runs away to St Ishmaels Seconds who were bowled out for 69 in response to a Whitland total of 104 for eight. It was an afternoon for the younger batsmen in the Whitland team as Mathew Webb scored 21, James Davies 20 and Daniel Newton 19 not out with one six and one four. Adam Davies took four for 41 for Tish and Lenny Rees two for 24. The medium pace of Simon Davies accounted for five of the Tish batsmen at the economical cost of 15 runs and Whitland skipper Stuart Harris took three for 21. Paul Palmer scored 26 and Adam Davies 21 to notch up over half of the Tish total between them. A seventh wicket partnership of 78 between Hywel Gibbs who scored 60 with six fours and one six and wicket keeper Nick Johnson with 44 including one four and six fours lifted the Lamphey total to 170 for nine at home to Pembroke Dock. The only other double figure contributions came from skipper Paul White with 14, Steve Vale with 15 and Haydn Cole with 16. John Camani caused most of the problems for the Lamphey batsmen with four for 34 supported by all rounder John Davies with two for ten and Mohammad Khan with two for 26. Kahn was on form with the bat, and in tandem with Peter Kingdom gave the Dock the ideal start with an opening partnership of 79, which ended when Kingdom was caught by Paul White off the bowling of Jason Oatley for 27. Kahn hit four successive fours off Hywel Gibbs but his fine innings ended when he was caught by Johnson off the bowling of Gibbs for 62 having his one six and seven fours. Steve Hartley maintained the momentum with 33 before being bowled by Steve Vale but the Dock innings fell away when Vale returned for his second spell and Haydn Cole came on to bowl. At one time the Dock were 103 for two but the visitors were restricted to 156 for eight with victory in sight as Vale took four for 24 and Cole two for 22.
Division Four
Lawrenny Seconds were dismissed for 98 at home to their Narberth counterparts despite the efforts of Alun Evans with 36 including five fours and one six and Steve Campbell with 28. The experienced duo of Gary Hughes and Nick Evans took three for 23 and two for 31 respectively and there were also good performances by two of the younger bowlers with Brinley Toms taking three for 22 and Andrew Phillips two for 11. Opener Andrew Williams had a solid innings of 24 when the Narberth team responded but it was left to an unbroken eighth wicket partnership between Gary Hughes and Nick Evans to take the visitors to a winning total of 107. Evans finished on 19 not out and Hughes 15 not out, as Alun Evans took two for 12 with Stephen Rees took two for 25. A depleted Manorbier team were bundled out for 68 at Crymych chasing a Crymych total of 199 for five declared. Eurig Lewis had a quick fire innings of 63, Rhydian Wyn chipped in with 39 not out, David Deardon scored 28 and Jim Kerr 24. Five of the Manorbier bowlers each picked up one wicket. Five Crymych bowlers also took wickets with Alun Parry taking two for ten and David Deardon two for 14. Former Manorbier all rounder Jeremy Smith created a big impression on his debut for his new club Pembroke. He opened the batting for the Second Eleven in their away match against Haverfordwest Thirds and had an excellent innings of 103 to demonstrate his quality as a batsman, hitting one six and ten fours in the process. Although he dominated the Pembroke innings there were useful contributions of 24 from skipper Simon Smith-Wrench and 20 by Andrew Price together with an invaluable 27 not out from Hugh Davies. Haverfordwest Thirds were bowled out for 132 in reply to the Pembroke total of 185 for four. Nigel Jenkins scored 25, Colin Slater 16 and Mathew Vaughan 15. Teenagers Andrew Price and Charlie Allen took four for 17 and four for 39 respectively. Allen also had the experience of claiming a hat-trick whilst Jeremy Smith followed up his fine innings with a spell of two for 18.
Division Five
Carew Thirds celebrated their first league match on their new ground at Carew with a ten wickets win at home to Herbrandston Seconds who were bowled out for 52. Michael Spearing top scored with 20 as Kerry Waters took four for 12 with a controlled piece of bowling and newcomer Terry Leach took four for 24. Openers James Hinchcliffe and Hugh Brock looked at ease in their match winning stand of 57 for the Carew team with Brock finishing on 28 not out and Hinchcliffe on 25 not out. Cresselly Thirds held on for a draw in their away match at Camrose and Spittal with a total of 73 for five replying to a Camrose and Spittal Seconds total of 111 for six. Adrian Harries scored 35 and Gelly James 26 in the Camrose and Spittal total and the pick of the Cresselly batsmen were Colin Murphy with 19 not out and David Court with 15 not out. In a low scoring match at St Florence, the Saints had a narrow two wickets win against Whitland Thirds who were restricted to 95 for eight. Both teams had to graft for the runs with experienced players leading the run scoring. Colin John scored 30 of the Whitland runs with four fours and one six and had support from Hefin Thomas with 16 all in boundaries and Dawood Parker with 14. Young Nico Setaro backed up with 13 not out. Peter Hall took five for 15 in 12 tight overs for St Florence and then made sure of a win for his team with a steadfast innings of 50 not out as the Saints reached 96 for eight. Paul Parkinson provided support with 15. Ashley Evans took five for 17 and Barry Rees two for 19 for the visitors. Supporters sponsored each of the match balls involving the three Whitland teams in the league matches. The club is indebted to Ar Werth, Cleddau Insurance and Taf Valley Coaches. Narberth Thirds were soon in trouble at home to Llechryd Seconds with opening batsman Emyr Jenkins being the only batsman in double figures with 11. Nick North took four for 15 and Rhys Davies three for nine as the Narberth team were dismissed for 40. The visitors passed their total for the loss of four wickets with openers Alvin Johnson and John Quinney scoring 19 and 13 not out respectively. Jordan Howell showed why he has been selected for the Welsh Under 12 squad by taking three for ten in four overs.
Division Six
Saundersfoot Seconds lead the Division Six table following their 82 runs win at home to Hundleton Seconds who were dismissed for 105 in reply to a Saundersfoot total of 187 for five. For Saundersfoot Paul Brookes hit 11 fours and one six in his undefeated knock of 73 and received support from Roger Stanford and Paul Morris both of whom scored 32. David Prout took two of the wickets to fall. Carl John with 44 and opening batsman Luke Williams with 23 were the only batsmen in double figures as Grant Hardy took three for 20, Chris Parker two for 13, Chris Hawkes two for 17 and Andrew Evans two for 32. The local derby between Pembroke Dock Seconds and Lamphey Seconds ended in a draw with the Dock on 148 for eight in reply to a Lamphey total of 163 for nine. Jason Griffiths scored 39, Lewis Haines 38 and skipper Andrew Skeels 25 for the visitors as Luke Murray with four for 37 and John Coles with three for 38 picked up seven of the wickets for the Dock. Skeels followed up his batting to take five for 47, Chris Cook finished on 13 for the Dock after Jamie Hyatt had scored 25 earlier. Kilgetty Seconds lost by 108 runs away to Stackpole Seconds who reached 156 for seven. Alex Wilkes top scored with 67 and Steve Alderman scored 17. For the visitors Adam Evans took four for 22 and wrist spinner Gareth Gwyther three for 36. Although Josh Bevan scored 20 the Kilgetty team were bowled out for just 44 as Katharine Adams took three for two, Gareth Brown three for 17 and Charlie Evans two for 12.
