Division One

St. Ishmaels held on to their top of the table spot with a tense last over win away at Lawrenny and Carew are just three points behind on 220 points following their five wickets win at home to Haverfordwest. Cresselly are in third place with 207 points, followed by Lawrenny on 182 points. In the match at Lawrenny the home team scored 156 for eight. No batsmen scored 50 but a number contributed to the total. All rounder Ceri Jones led the way with 33 not out including two sixes and three fours, Robert Williams scored 24, Andrew Cole 22 with both Steven Lewis and Ian Jenkins reaching 19. For the visitors Andrew Palmer took two for 28, spinner Daniel Flynn two for 42 and young opening bowler James Salter two for 48. Tish were in a bit of bother at 27 for three but Jonathan Pawlett and Andrew Williams produced a match winning fourth wicket partnership of 115. Williams scored 44 before being bowled by Ceri Jones and Pawlett 73, an innings which included one six and ten fours before he was bowled by Steve Lewis. The only other player in double figures was Andrew Palmer with 11. Tish reached a winning total of 157 for six with three balls of the match remaining. Robert Williams finished with three for 33 and Ceri Jones two for 33. Haverfordwest scored 172 for nine at Carew. Opener Danny Potter has been in excellent form this season and he produced some glorious stroke play in his innings of 65 which included one six and five fours before he was caught by Darren Thomas off the bowling of Tim Hicks. Nick Dyer showed his all round qualities with 27; Phil Kirkby scored 24 and David Davies 14. For Carew Simon Wood took four for 51 and Tim Hicks three for 33. A fourth wicket partnership of 90 between Brian Hall and Tim Hicks paved the way for Carew to win by five wickets in a run chase timed to perfection. After the early loss of Nick Scourfield, Ian Sefton scored 26 before being caught by Richard James off the bowling of Town skipper Adrian Griffiths. However it was the two left handers Hall and Hicks who guided Carew home. Hall has developed his own unique style of play and has become a very effective Division One batsman in recent years. The purists might claim that his bat is sometimes horizontal rather than vertical, or that he can appear to lunge at the ball. However, he watches the ball on to the bat like a hawk and shows great powers of concentration and determination. In addition, anything remotely loose gets the treatment and he is quick between the wickets. He rarely looked in danger as he knuckled down initially to get a good start and towards the end of his innings he was dominating the bowling in a fine innings of 76 which ended when he was caught in the deep by Karl Rhead off the bowling of Nick Dyer for 76. He only scored six fours in his innings but he and Hicks ran well between the wickets. Hicks finished with 58 not out including two sixes and four fours during a fine innings where he displayed the full range and power of his stroke play. For Haverfordwest Nick Dyer took two for 30 and Adrian Griffiths two for 38. In a low scoring match at Narberth, the visitors Whitland were bowled out for 111 a total, which would have had David Shepherd hopping around in his home in Devon. The Narberth bowlers were all on the spot and aided by some excellent fielding, the highlight being a one handed catch by Narberth skipper Marc Hughes to dismiss Shane Morgan off the bowling of Ben Hughes. Paul Webb and David Lee took the total to 27 before Lee was bowled by Ben Quartermaine but that wicket triggered off a steady procession of batsmen until Owain Davies came to the crease. In a rear guard action he scored 37 before being the penultimate wicket to fall when he was bowled by Ian Hughes. Mark Lee supported with 12. For Narberth spinner Matthew Johns and opening bowler Ben Hughes both finished with three for 18 and Ben Quartermaine took two for 27. The Narberth players were in buoyant mood at the interval where as the Whitland team thought they were at least 30 runs short. How fortunes changed! Young strike bowlers Iestyn Scourfield and Bobby Webb made an immediate impact and Narberth soon found themselves 16 for four and later 45 for nine. Narberth opener Ian Hughes was the first to get into double figures with 11 but then Paul Phillips making a welcome return to the cricket field and in only his second innings of the season held up the Whitland win with a fighting innings of 27 from 74 balls. Phillips contained his natural attacking style and received excellent support from Ben Quartermaine, which took the Narberth total from 45 to 79. Dreams of a Narberth victory evaporated when Phillips was bowled by Iestyn Scourfield to give Whitland an unexpected victory or at least one they would not have anticipated at the tea interval. Scourfield finished with figures of four for 11 and Webb took two for 18. After the pair's initial burst Matthew Davies came onto the scene to take four for 25 before Quartermaine had the last word in taking the final wicket. Cresselly travelled to Pembroke and scored 196 for eight. Adam Chandler scored 78 including two sixes and eight fours and left-hander Simon Cole scored 34 as the pair had a productive third wicket partnership of 74. Cole was stumped by Will Davies off Chris Thomas to break the partnership but Chandler went on to score 78 before being trapped leg before wicket by spinner Nigel Philips. Earlier Phil Williams promoted to opening the batting had a steady innings of 23. For the Pembroke team Chris Thomas took three for 57 and Nigel Phillips two for 39. Skipper Barry Evans appeared to be taking Pembroke to safety in a typical back to the wall innings in the Pembroke cause. At one time Pembroke were 84 for three but Cresselly spinner Ryan Lewis took three wickets in one over. He bowled Rob Weston, got Colin Kaijaks leg before wicket and then bowled Dan Williams. This over altered the outcome of the match and Barry Evans was eventually leg before wicket to Huw Neale for 61 having hit seven fours. The only other batsmen in double figures were Will Davies with 14 and Chris Thomas with 12 as Pembroke were bowled out for 111. Ryan Lewis finished with four for 27, opening bowler Huw Neale took three for 22 and the nagging accuracy of skipper Lyn Richards gave him figures of two for 17. Neyland continued their recovery with a five wickets win over bottom of the table Burton. The visitors were bowled out for 140. Jonathan Venables scored 36 with five fours, all rounder Steve Jones 32 and skipper Mike Venables 19. Patrick Hannon continued his comeback with another good haul after taking five for 13; spinner Gary Lloyd took two for 27 and Jeremy Charles two for 42. In reply Neyland reached 143 for five. Paul Murray batted well for his 51 supported by Jeremy Charles with 42 not out and Lee Summons with 20 not out. Dean Murphy took two for 39 for Burton and there was a wicket a piece for Jonathan Scale, James Venables and Mark Griffiths. Scale kept the batsmen tied down as he took one for ten in 12 accurate overs.

Dean Flood has taken wickets consistently this season and he finished with five for 15 supported by Nigel Delaney with two for 30. Haverfordwest were in a hurry to finish the match and scored 80 without loss in the middle of the ninth over. Adam James and Julian James showed that they were capable of scoring runs in the same attacking manner as their dad Steve. Adam James scored 52 not out from just 23 deliveries and Julian James finished with 21 not out. Llanrhian reached a total of 155 for eight at home to Lamphey. The Jones brothers Luke and Ben gave the total a boost in their sixth wicket partnership of 63, which eventually took the game away from the visitors. Luke Jones scored 41 before being bowled by Paul White and Ben Jones was 39 not out. Spinner White took three for 50 and Grant Cole took three for 24. Cole batting at number ten was also the leading scorer with the bat with an attacking innings of 20 not out which included two sixes and one four. It was not enough to save Lamphey from defeat however and the visitors were bowled out for 96. Paul White with 17 and Gareth Nicholas with 15 were the other batsmen in double figures. Llanrhian skipper Chris Cousens took four for 18, Paul Walsh two for 19 and Luke Jones three for 23. Saundersfoot scored 179 for six at Stackpole. Another stylish innings from Paul Mansbridge was worth 41 runs supported by Steve Cole with 33, Danny Caine with 30, Mike Franklin with 21, James Caine 17 not out and Ian Poole 14. Richard McKay took four for 41 for Stackpole who came close but not close enough with a total of 169 for nine. The match could have gone either way but Saundersfoot were unable to make the final breakthrough. Alan Webster scored 60 of the Stackpole runs backed up by Andrew Hay with 41 and James Roberts with 18. Saundersfoot skipper Chris Parker took four for 36 and all rounder Danny Caine three for 43. In other Division Two matches in the local derby at Hook the visitors Llangwm won by just eight runs after bowling out Hook for 136 in reply to Llangwm total of 144. Division Three

Cresselly Seconds kept in touch with the Division Three leaders after getting the better of a drawn encounter at home to Narberth Seconds. An excellent century by Damian Arthur who was bowled off the last ball of the innings by Gary Hughes provided the backbone for the Cresselly total of 187 for four. Arthur scored 105 with eleven fours and two sixes and shared a first wicket partnership of 60 with Rhydian Rees who scored 11. Arthur also had excellent support from Simon Allen-Clarke with 41 which included seven fours. Spinner Dan Hughes took two for 49 and his dad Gary took two for 55. Promotion contenders St Ishmaels Seconds proved to be too strong for the bottom of the division team St Florence who bowled out for 32. It was excellent bowling by Tish and Mark Williams was the only batsman in double figures with 10. Gareth Cheshire took four for five, James John four for 12 and Scott Griffiths two for six. His opening partner Rhydian Wyn scored 21 but wickets fell quickly after the openers were parted and the only other significant contribution was made by Murray Briggs with 19 not out.
