Of the 30 matches scheduled on Saturday, just three were started and only one played to a conclusion, with rain calling a halt to proceedings elsewhere.
Division One In Division One, Whitland had an away fixture against the leaders Haverfordwest. After a delayed start, the match was reduced to 40 overs per side and the visitors got to 133 for 6. Skipper Paul Webb and his opening partner David Lee had a first wicket stand of 67 in 21 overs. Webb scored 32, including four 4s, before being caught by Stephen Phillips at gully off the bowling of spinner Nick Dyer and Lee reached 24 before giving a catch behind to Huw Scriven off the bowling of Town skipper Adrian Griffiths. Paul Davies accelerated the scoring. The tall left- hander hit five 4s in his innings of 39, which ended when he fell to a good catch at long-on by Danny Potter off the bowling of Adrian Griffiths. Colin John was 16 not out at the end and Whitland boosted the total by scoring 36 from the last five overs. Adrian Griffiths and Nick Dyer were the pick of the Town bowlers. Griffiths returned from injury and bowling off a short run he made the batsmen concentrate on every ball. He finished with 3 from 15 from 10 tight overs and Dyer took 3 for 49 from 11 overs. He also bowled tightly until he conceded some runs late in the innings. Understandably, Haverfordwest had been keen for the match to be played sitting at the top of the table, but not quite out of sight of both Carew and Cresselly. Unfortunately, all of the hard work could not enable the game to be played to a conclusion. Openers Danny Potter and Richards James only faced four overs from Owen Edwards and Robert Merriman, with Haverfordwest reaching 12 for no wicket. Carew failed by just eight runs to beat both Neyland and the weather and in doing so relinquished any hope of catching Haverfordwest at the top of the Division One table. In the match at Carew, the visitors Neyland travelled without six regular first team players and were bowled out for 52. After a delayed start the match was reduced to 33 overs and the only Neyland batsmen in double figures were Phil Davies with 14 together with Andrew Miller and Paul Murray who both scored 10. Wayne Cannon and Robert Scourfield did the bulk of the damage by taking 4 for 19 and 3 for 11, respectively. There was also some good bowling by Simon Wood with 2 for 10 from seven overs and Rhys Davies with 1 for 11 from seven overs. With rain clouds hovering, Carew knew that they had to score quickly, but could only got to 45 for 3 from 9.1 overs before the rain came. One of the keystones for the Carew success this season has been the opening partnership between Ian Sefton and Nick Scourfield. In the search for quick runs, it was broken up, with Scourfield dropping down the order. Unfortunately for Carew, the plan backfired and, apart from Ian Sefton with a brisk innings of 35, the other Carew batsmen found it difficult to get the ball away. For Neyland, John Jones and Henry Durant both bowled well and the ball was not coming on to the bat. It is difficult to score runs when the ball is stopping, but Sefton somehow managed to master the art. He hit one towering six over long-off into the gardens and in the next over he planted two big sixes over midwicket, one of which struck the windscreen of Simon Wood's car without doing any damage! Sefton's innings ended when he was bowled by John Jones and spectators sensed that Carew's hopes of snatching a win faded at that moment. When Simon Wood was bowled by Henry Durant for one, the umpires decided to call it a day and the match was all over in the 10th over. John Jones finished with 2 for 24 and Henry Durant took 1 for 19.
Division Two
In Division Two, Carew were away to Division Two leaders Llangwm. The match was reduced to 36 overs per team after a delayed start and Llangwm totalled 129 for 8. Andrew Harries scored 31 before being trapped leg before wicket by Nick Cope and Ian Gow scored 27 before being caught by wicket-keeper Gethin Evans off the bowling of Scott Helmich. Other batsmen in double figures were Jo Jo Francis with 14 and Luke Brock with 13. The Carew bowling quartet of Steve Ive, Scott Helmich, Darren Thomas and Nick Cope each finished with two wickets at a modest cost. Darren Thomas took 2 for 17, Scott Helmich 2 for 25, Nick Cope 2 for 26 and Steve Ive 2 for 33. Unfortunately, no play was possible after the tea interval. It will be an anxious week for the cricketers of Pembroke, Haverfordwest Seconds, Llangwm and Burton following the narrow eight runs victory by Haverfordwest Seconds at Stackpole. The visitors had been dismissed for 113, but after a good start, Stackpole fell away and were bowled out for 105. The win has pushed Haverfordwest up into second place, 12 points behind leaders Llangwm and 10 points above former leaders Burton. Two out of the three clubs could be promoted, but if Haverfordwest Seconds finish in the top two positions, only one of either Llangwm or Burton will be promoted and Pembroke will live to fight another season in Division One
