Division One

Carew crashed to defeat in the Division One match of the day at Haverfordwest after losing their last six wickets for just 13 runs. The visitors were dismissed for 168 in reply to a Town total of 218 for six. The Carew batsmen could argue with some justification that the pitch became livelier after the tea interval. Some balls rose sharply off a length whether bowled by the pacemen or spinner Nick Dyer. Some also kept low as Carew skipper Robert Scourfield can testify after being trapped leg before wicket by Stephen Phillips to be the last man out with nine balls of the match remaining. All of the early order Haverfordwest batsmen contributed to the total with some steady batting. Openers Danny Potter and Richard James scored 34 and 25 respectively before both were bowled by Tim Hicks. David Davies and skipper Karl Rhead enjoyed a third wicket partnership of 60 before Davies was bowled by Simon Wood for 21, which brought Phil Kirkby to the crease. After an uncertain start Kirkby was dropped three times before putting the Carew attack to the sword. In an innings which lasted just 38 deliveries he scored 57 before being caught by Wayne Cannon at long off off the bowling of Simon Wood for 57. He hit two towering sixes and six fours. Although he lost Karl Rhead on the way for 33, Stephen Phillips maintained the run rate in his innings of 24 not out. For Carew Simon Wood finished with three for 58 and Tim Hicks two for 37. Carew suffered a setback with the early dismissal of Nick Scourfield caught behind by Huw Scriven off the bowling of Phil Kirkby without scoring. Ian Sefton restrained his natural instincts until he hit out at Nick Dyer to be caught by Karl Rhead for 30 and Brian Hall had looked good before being caught by Clive Tucker when he spooned the ball to mid on off the bowling of Stephen Phillips for 36. When Simon Wood and Tim Hicks were at the crease Carew were sitting comfortably. Although Wood was trapped leg before wicket to Phil Kirkby for 24, Wayne Cannon and Tim Hicks kept the scoreboard ticking along until both fell to Nick Dyer for 31 and 46 respectively. Karl Rhead's ploy of switching the bowlers quickly had an unsettling effect and triggered off a collapse to give Haverfordwest a victory by a margin of 50 runs. The result may well have had the final say on the destination of this year's championship with Cresselly and Carew trailing Haverfordwest by 29 and 31 points respectively. However cricket is a funny old game and you never know until the last ball of the season is bowled. Nick Dyer finished with four for 36 and Kirkby had figures of three for 32 in his three spells. Cresselly won by nine wickets at Hook after dismissing the home team for 115. Not for the first time lower order batsmen Andrew Thomas top scored for Hook with his innings of 25 not out, batting at number nine, Mathew Rowlands scored 18 with both Ben Field and Mike Haltam scoring 16. Opening bowlers Huw Neale and Stefan Jenkins took four for 42 and three for 49 respectively and spinner Ryan Lewis squeezed in to take three for 11. After Julian Arthur retired hurt for 14 Andrew Harris and Simon Cole took the total to 107 before Harris was bowled by Keith James for 44 after hitting ten fours. Simon Cole continued to stroke the ball around and ended with 55 not out with two sixes and nine fours in a Cresselly total of 119 for one. Lawrenny won by eight wickets at home to Pembroke who were bowled out for 92. Opener Barry Evans top scored with 18 in a patient innings of 90 minutes before he was caught by Johnny Matthias off the bowling of James Buckle. Phil Stephens and teenager Rob Weston both scored 15 and opener Hugh Davies ten. Simon Cole took three of the first four wickets to fall to finish with three for 28 and the Pembroke collapse was triggered off by spinner Ian Jenkins with three for 15 and 12 tight overs and James Buckle who finished with four for nine. A first wicket partnership of 66 between Andrew Cole and Simon Cole put Lawrenny well on the road to victory. Simon Cole was bowled by Kevin Jenkins for 35 after hitting six fours and Andrew Cole was caught by Anton John off the bowling of Kevin Jenkins for 30. James Buckle was 21 not out and was joined by Christian Phillips as Lawrenny reached 94 for two. Kevin Jenkins was the only Pembroke bowler to test the Lawrenny batsmen on the day and took two for 12 in his six overs. St. Ishmaels held on for a draw for a total of 139 for nine at Neyland after the home team had reached 189 for seven. John Jones had a hard hitting innings of 56 for Neyland with three sixes and seven fours supported by Greg Miller with 52, Phil Davies with 21, Scott John with 15 and Gary Lloyd with 12 not out. Teenage prodigy Andrew Salter took three for 39 with ten overs of testing off spin. Andrew Palmer top scored for Tish with 52 supported by lower order batsmen Chris Wilson with 32 not out. Jeremy Charles was the most penetrative bowler and finished with figures of four for 32 and Phil Davies stepped in with his off spinners to take two for 15. In the local derby at Whitland the visitors Narberth reached a total of 154 for eight. Skipper Marc Hughes had an excellent innings of 72 with nine fours and appeared to be solid at one end as wickets fell at the other to Mark Lee and Paul Webb. Richard Adams was run out by Mathew Davies for 20, Ceri Davies was bowled by Paul Webb for ten and Mike Scale was caught by Paul Davies off the bowling of spinner Paul Webb for 18. When Hughes was bowled by Paul Webb with the total on 131 it became more difficult for Narberth batsmen to score runs and the lower order perished in an attempt to boost their run rate. Mark Lee was the pick of the Whitland bowlers and took three for 23 in his 12 overs, Paul Webb took three for 32 in his 11 overs and Rob Merriman took the other wicket to fall. Webb had a good all round match and led Whitland to victory by example. He had a productive first wicket stand of 85 with David Lee before Lee was caught and bowled by Nick Evans for 24. Webb went on to score 83 before being caught by Tom Richards off the bowling of spinner Mathew Johns. He had a good strike rate scoring the runs from 106 balls and hit one six and 15 fours. Paul Davies chipped in with 12 before Mark Lee with 20 not out and left hander Edward John with 11 not out took Whitland to victory by six wickets. Wily campaigner Nick Evans took three for 46 from his 12 overs in a rare first division appearance.
