Division One
Whitland won by 117 runs at home to Hook after building up a commanding total of 255 for 1. Following his team's impressive batting display against Cresselly in the quarter-final of the Harrison-Allen Bowl, skipper, Paul Webb, decided to bat upon winning the toss. He had a first wicket partnership of 41 with David Lee before Lee was caught by wicket-keeper Josh Brittan off the bowling of Andrew Thomas for 24. Webb and another left-hander, Paul Davies, then took control. At first it was not that easy as the Hook bowlers kept the ball on the spot, but perseverance paid off. Gradually, the batsmen accelerated to such an extent that 70 runs came from the last five overs. Both reached their century in an unbroken second wicket partnership of 214. When the innings closed, Webb had scored 107 not out, including three sixes and 16 fours and Davies scored 109 not out with 14 fours and three sixes. Paul Davies also had a hand in two early dismissals when Hook replied. He picked up two blinding catches at gully to dismiss Brennan Lay and Mike Haltam off the bowling of Mark Lee and Owen Edwards. Teenager Edwards had four of the first five wickets to fall and finish with figures of four for 29 in his seven overs supported by leg spinner Meyrick Rowlands with two for 23 and off spinner Paul Webb with two for 33. The main stumbling block to prevent a Whitland win was Hook batsman Jamie Phelps. In a superb batting display, Phelps scored 84 from 87 deliveries, including one six and 15 fours, and did his utmost to hold the Hook innings together. However, when he was bowled by Raff Williams, it signalled the end, and apart from the 16 extras, the only other batsman in double figures was Chris Absalom with ten. Haverfordwest remain in top spot after defeating St. Ishmaels at home by 46 runs. After threatening to score a century a number of times, Richard James succeeded on Saturday with a top quality innings of 105 not out, including 10 fours and had an opening stand of 158 with Danny Potter who scored 83 with 11 fours. The Haverfordwest innings closed on 226 for 4. In reply, Tish were bowled out for 180. Jonathan Pawlett continued his good form with 53 and Michael Symons had 41 not out supported by Phil Cockburn with 25. For Haverfordwest, paceman Simon Williams took 4 for 62 and spinner Nick Dyer 4 for 52. Cresselly remain in second place following a six wickets win away to Pembroke who scored 108 for 9. It could have a lot worse for the Pembroke team who at one stage were 58 for 5, but Nigel Phillips had a last wicket partnership of 31 with Anton John to restore some respectability to the total. Phillips was 35 not out with five fours and the other batsmen in double figures were skipper Mathew Mitchell with 16, lefthander Barry Evans with 14 and Phil Stephens with 12. Richard Harris did most of the damage for Cresselly. Taking the pace off the ball with his accurate medium-paced deliveries, Harris took 6 for 30 and irrepressible spinner Ryan Lewis took 3 for 21. Simon Cole and Phil Williams had an unbroken fourth wicket partnership of 47 to take Cresselly to a winning total of 112 for 4. The stylish Cole stroked seven fours and one six in his innings off 49 not out and Phil Williams scored 15 after Adam Chandler had been dismissed for 16. For Pembroke, Danny Williams took 2 for 44. Third placed Carew had a seven wickets win at Narberth after dismissing the home team for 86. Narberth lost their last six wickets for 34 runs as spinner John Canton took 4 for 35 and opening bowler Wayne Cannon 3 for 8 with Simon Wood picking up 2 for 8. Ceri Jones, who has a knack of scoring runs against Carew, was 17 not out batting at number 10 after earlier contributions of 16 by both Michael Scale and Thomas Richards and 11 by David Johns. Ian Sefton scored 10 off the first over bowled by Ian Hughes, but the Hughes family gained revenge when Sefton was caught by Marc Hughes off the bowling of Ben Hughes for 16 with the total on 10. Ben Hughes had a cracking caught and bowled catch to dismiss Brian Hall for four and then trapped Simon Wood leg before wicket for 12. However, Carew's rock Nick Scourfield scored 40 not out from 85 deliveries, including seven fours, to take the visitors to a total of 89 for 3, supported by left-hander Tim Hicks with 17 not out. Neyland have started to move up the Division One table and are now in fourth place after a comprehensive win at Lawrenny. Paul Murray had a mature innings of 94 not out, including 15 fours, and Greg Miller scored 16 not out with one six and seven fours as the Neyland openers batted extremely well to reach 175 without loss and overtake the Lawrenny total of 174 all out. Lawrenny opening batsman Simon Cole top scored in his team's total of 78, including one six and 11 fours, and had a second wicket partnership of 79 with James Buckle who scored 20. Andrew Cole senior dominated the opening stand of 39 with his innings of 32 which included five fours. Neyland spinner Phil Davies gave another reminder to the county selectors that he is knocking on the door of the county team with a 5 for 38 spell and Scott John took 2 for 7. Lawrenny had been well placed at 160 for 4 off 35 overs, but Phil Davies started the collapse by bowling James Buckle and skipper Steve Lewis.
Division Two
In the local derby in Carew, bottom placed Saundersfoot had their first victory of the season after restricting Carew Seconds to a total of 153 for 7. Left-hander Adrian Harries and Martin Scourfield gave the Carew team a solid if slowish start in their opening partnership of 100. Harries scored 45 before being caught by Simon Stanford off the bowling of Danny Caine and Scourfield 52 before being caught by James Caine off the bowling of Danny Caine. Apart from Scott Helmich who scored 26 none of the other Carew batsmen were able to make much of an impression on the score card. Danny Caine finished with figures of 4 for 36. Saundersfoot also had a good opening partnership as Danny James and Steve Cook put on 75 for the first wicket before James was dismissed for 31. Saundersfoot won by eight wickets following an unbroken partnership of 56 for the third wicket between Steve Cook who scored 53 not out with four fours and two sixes and James Caine with 34 not out. Gareth Brace and Ceri Davies picked up a wicket each and it was good to see Davies back in action after an injury. All-rounder Paul White, who has improved his batting this season, top scored with 54 not out, including three sixes and four fours, and had an eighth wicket partnership of 45 with Jason Oatley who blasted a quick 31 from 16 deliveries, including two sixes and three fours. Other useful contributions came from Hywel Gibbs with 12, Peter McGilloway with 11 and skipper Rob Matthias with ten. Opening bowler Paul Hood posed problems for most of the Lamphey batsmen and took 3 for 35, while Jonathan Bennett took 3 for 28 in his 12 overs. Although five Herbie batsmen scored 20 none of the batsmen were able to knuckle down to reach a half century. Nathan Banner scored 26, Jonathan Bennett 24, Steve Bennett 22 not out, Gary Davies 21 and Johnny Lewis 20, and when the last pair were together, Herbie decided not to take risks from the last over and the match was drawn with the Herbie innings closing on a total of 137 for 9. Gareth Knight scored 46, including two sixes and four fours, before being run out by Ben Quartermaine and enjoyed an opening partnership of 72 with Steve Flook who scored 17 before being caught in the slips by Asher Stanford off the bowling of Gary Hughes. Although Paul Oeppen with 14 and Jeremy Smith with 13 maintained the momentum for a while, Ben Quartermaine had other ideas and finished with 5 for 38. All of his victims came in his second spell with four batsmen being bowled to stifle Manorbier's attempts at a large total. Experienced off-spinner Nick Evans took 2 for 26 in 12 overs in support. In response, Narberth began cautiously with both Phil Kidney and Neil Powling bowling good lines to restrict Narberth's run chase. Opener Asher Stanford was run out after scoring 17 and this sparked a minor crisis as Narberth slumped to 41 for 5 after 20 overs. However, the visitors came back into the game when Ceri Davies and Chris Jones throw the bat at the ball with some success to regain the initiative. Davies had a very quick innings of 52 with one six and eight fours during which he enjoyed five lives!
