Division One

Cresselly are the new leaders of Division One of the Dragon Sports Pembrokeshire County Cricket League following their comfortable seven-wicket win at Narberth.

Apart from Richard Adams with a fighting innings of 62 with a mixture of determined defence and aggression, most of the Narberth batsmen found it difficult to get going against the varied Cresselly bowling attack.

Adams found a willing ally in Wayne Howells with 21 and the only other batsmen to reach double figures were skipper Ian Hughes with 16 and Mark Hughes with 10.

Cresselly skipper Lyn Richards opened the bowling and ended with 3 for 44 and left-arm seamer Neil Gregory also made an impression as he picked up three wickets.

Spinner Ryan Lewis had two late wickets and ended with figures of 2 for 3.

Cresselly made short work of reaching the Narberth total of 155, which they passed for the loss of three wickets in the 30th over.

Opener Julian Arthur had an attractive innings of 44, including one gigantic six out of the ground, before he was caught at mid-off by Richard Adams from a top edge from the bowling of Ian Hughes.

Simon Cole had a stylish knock of 59 not out and his batting was described by Julian Arthur, who was his partner for much of the innings, as a "sight to see."

Adam Chandler also chipped in with a bright and breezy innings of 38.

The Narberth wicket-takers were Ian Hughes, Richard Prout and Ben Hughes, who picked up a wicket on his first team debut.

Carew are snapping at the heels of their arch rivals following their commanding win at Llangwm where the home team were bowled out for 105 chasing a Carew total of 223 for 4.

Opener Ian Sefton had a brilliant innings of 106 from 113 deliveries and found the boundary 17 times before giving a return catch to Andrew Harries.

He had support at the other end, initially from Nick Scourfield with 27, then Steve Cole had an attacking innings of 49 while Phil Jones gave the innings a late boost with his quick undefeated knock of 26.

For Llangwm, Andrew Brock took 2 for 29.

The Llangwm batsmen went for the runs initially, but when wickets tumbled a draw became top priority.

Gary Phillips looked like being a stumbling block to a Carew win. The middle order batsman had scored 42 with five 4s before being the last out with just three overs to go.

Skipper Darren Thomas kept faith in the spin of John Canton and the Carew spinner repaid that faith by bowling Phillips to complete a fine win.

Wickets were shared amongst the Carew bowlers. John Canton ended with 2 for 10, all-rounder Rob Scourfield took 3 for 9 in nine overs and there were two wickets each for both Darren Thomas and Simon Wood.

Saundersfoot made the long journey to St. Ishmaels, who won by nine wickets, with the result that Saundersfoot have now taken over from Tish at the bottom of the table.

Saundersfoot need to bat with more consistency to consolidate their position in Division One and on Saturday struggled a little to reach a total of 117 for 8.

All-rounder James Caine top scored with a fluent innings of 35 and he was supported by Paul Mansbridge with 19, while both Steve Cook and David Parcell had supporting roles with 14 apiece.

The Tish bowlers bowled accurately from wicket to wicket. Jonathan Pawlett took 3 for 25, Paul Hood took 2 for 31 and Andrew Palmer 2 for 35.

After the tea interval, batting took on a completely different complexion, with the Williams brothers, Steven and Andrew, combining in the second wicket partnership of 88.

Tish reached a winning total of 120 for 1 without much difficulty and picked up an extra batting point in the process.

Steven Williams ended with 59 not out, including 10 fours, and his brother Andrew was 38 not out with a six and three 4s.

Kevin Sykes was the pick of the Saundersfoot bowlers and took 1 for 14 in his seven overs.

A dogged performance by Whitland at Haverfordwest earned the visitors a draw as Whitland reached 126 for 9 in response to a Haverfordwest total of 226 for 5.

Opening batsman Jonathan Griffiths had an excellent knock of 83 for the Town, including two 6s and six 4s. Scoring was a dangerous occupation with Griffiths at the crease as he hit the scoreboard with his sixes, one of which went through the Perspex glass and struck Whitland's scorer David Merriman on the shoulder.

Another left-hander, Phil Kirkby gave Griffiths just the right support with an attacking innings of 72 and the other contribution of note came from Karl Rhead with 25.

Spinner Meyrick Rowlands ended with 3 for 43. There were two wickets from Mark Lee, and spinner Edward John did well to bowl his 12 overs for 40 runs after conceding 12 runs in his opening over.

When Whitland replied, skipper Paul Webb dropped anchor with 33 from 122 deliveries as wickets fell at the other end. Paul Davies scored 18 and Colin John 13, but Meyrick Rowlands played a key part in preventing Haverfordwest from winning with his innings of 33 not out.

Former Narberth all-rounder Mathew Johns took 5 for 26 with 12 overs of accurate off-spin and paceman Simon Williams took 4 for 22.

Lawrenny's up and down season continued with a seven-wicket defeat at Lamphey.

An accurate and penetrative spell by Lamphey skipper Daniel Sutton resulted in him taking 5 for 15 and Lawrenny being bowled out for 92 in the 37th over.

Opener Adrian Harries batted well for his 44 with six 4s before being run out with a direct hit by Robert Matthias from square leg and James Buckle scored 16 for the visitors.

Veteran Lamphey all-rounder Peter Hall celebrated his 57th birthday with a wicket. There was also a wicket for Greg England, and Martin Lewis took 2 for 29.

When Lamphey batted after tea, Peter Hall scored 23 and Daniel Sutton looked to knock off the runs quickly in his innings of 36. He hit six 4s before being caught by James Buckle off the bowling of Lawrenny skipper Robert Williams.

Craig Nutty took over where Sutton had left off as he had four 4s and a six in his aggressive undefeated 28, which guided Lamphey to a winning total of 94 for 3 in the 19th over.

Division Two

Carew Seconds were involved in an exciting game at home to Hook who have had a troubled start to the season since being relegated from Division One.

Hook looked to be in the driving seat when Carew Seconds were reduced to 31 for 5, but the home team fought back. The batsmen applied themselves, with opener Martin Scourfield cementing the innings together with his knock of 40 and Jeremy Griffiths had a face-saving innings of 42, with three 4s and a six, which hit the top of the clubhouse roof.

The Hook hero was Wayne Griffiths with a superb spell of 6 for 19 from 12 overs, supported by Jason Conroy, who took 3 for 45 with his leg-spinners.

Jamie Phelps played a big part in Hook's narrow one wicket win with his innings of 44, supported by Gary Martin with 24.

Keith James played a decisive role with 27 not out and Wayne Griffiths joined him with the total on 129. The pair took Hook to a one wicket win on 138 for 9 to move the visitors out of the relegation zone.

Kerry Waters took 4 for 26 and Ceri Davies took 3 for 33 for Carew Seconds.

Pembroke picked up their first win of the season after building up a total of 181 for 6 at Fishguard.

Barry Evans top scored with 63 and received excellent support from Phil Hay, who had another good week with his innings of 40.

Andrew Proud took 4 for 23 for Fishguard, who were bowled out for just 88 in reply.

Former Haverfordwest skipper Jonathan Twigg top scored for the home team with a defiant innings of 18.

Perry Phillips took out the first three batsmen and ended with 3 for 12 and then his father Nigel got into the act and took 4 for 23 with his spinners.

Leg-spinner Paul White also had a productive spell, which yielded two wickets.

Division Three

Division Three leaders Hundleton had a comfortable away win at Burton, after dismissing Burton Seconds for a modest total of 124. David Murphy was the only Burton batsman to come to terms with the Hundleton bowlers in his innings of 42.

Richard Allen took 4 for 27 and Jason Oatley had figures of 3 for 26 from 10 tight overs.

Consistent early order batting soon notched up a total of 126 for 2. Morgan Allen cracked six 4s in his innings of 29, Stephen Williams was 29 not out, John Tysoe 25 and Jonathan Williams 28 not out.

Manorbier kept in touch with the leaders, despite not being able to finish off the innings of Narberth Seconds in a drawn match.

Keith May and Jeremy Smith made sure that Manorbier would post a large total in their respective knocks of 61 and 54 as Manorbier reached 174 for 8.

Richard Howell bore the brunt of the Narberth bowling attack in a determined spell of 6 for 40.

Narberth Seconds' batsmen struggled to keep their wickets intact and the visitors were on the rocks at 64 for 9.

However, the last wicket pair of Richard Howell and Ceri Davies put some backbone into the Narberth innings in a match-saving last wicket partnership of 71 as they shared the crease for 18 overs.

Ceri Davies likes nothing better than giving the ball a tap. However, although the young player swashed at frequent intervals, the wise counsel of Richard Howell at the other end, ensured that Davies did not buckle at any time.

Davies ended with a splendid innings on 64 not out with seven 4s and a six, while Howell got his head down to finish with 19 not out.

For Manorbier, Neil Powling took 4 for 22 and there were two wickets each for both Jonathan Hughes and Justin Evans.

Cresselly Seconds won by three wickets at home to Llangwm Seconds who scored 103 before being bowled out. Gwilym Lewis top scored with a quick 28, which included two 6s and two 4s, supported by Simon Preddy with 24.

For the Cresselly team, Sion Jenkins took 3 for 18 and Matthew Lewis 3 for 24. Phil James gave nothing away and only conceded 10 runs in his 12 overs.

In reply, Cresselly Seconds were made to work for the runs. However, a fourth wicket partnership of 54 between the experienced pair of Philip James and Hugh Griffiths proved to be crucial to the outcome of the match.

James hit a six and four 4s in a well-worked innings of 35, and a solid knock of 31 not out by Griffiths made sure that the Cresselly team passed the Llangwm total for the loss of seven wickets.

Sion Lewis took 2 for 18 and Shaun Waller 2 for 32 for the visitors.

Division Four

Lawrenny Seconds are the new leaders of Division Four after salvaging a draw in their home match against Stackpole Seconds.

The visitors aggregated 177 for 4, with young Aaron Nicholas scoring 54 not out, supported by Owen Shanklin with 29 not out.

Ten-year-old Brad Jenkins was one of four bowlers to take a wicket for the Lawrenny team.

Simon Cole with 28 and wicket-keeper David Jones, who was 28 not out, helped Lawrenny Seconds to safety at 123 for 9.

Anthony Canton took 4 for 22 for the visitors, supported by Welsh Ladies cricket international Katherine Huxley, who took 3 for 13 and Owen Shanklin with 2 for 21.

Pembroke Dock suffered a rare defeat after being restricted to a total of 110 for 8 away to Camrose and Spittal Seconds. Nicky Daley with 24 and Peter Kingdom with 23 were the only batsmen to offer real resistance as Adam Davies took 3 for 28, supported by Brian Hawkins and Gareth Leggett, who both picked up two wickets.

Adrian Harries, with 40, and Gelly James, with 23 not out, steered the Camrose and Spittal team to a comfortable seven-wicket win.

Carew Thirds built up a commanding total of 173 for 5 at home to Crymych. Martyn Cole with 55 led the way, James Hatton scored 49 and teenager Scott Helmich demonstrated his all round talents with 32 not out.

Lee Pierce was the pick of the Crymych bowlers with a return of 4 for 39.

In reply, Crymych reached 99 for 6, with Lawrence Harries 22 not out. Graham Purser took 2 for 16 for the Carew team.

Pembroke Seconds won by 93 runs at home to Neyland Seconds, who were dismissed for 88 chasing a Pembroke Seconds total of 181 for 6.

Kevin Jenkins with 71 and Danny Williams with 59 combined in a second wicket partnership of 137 which provided the platform for the Pembroke win, in spite of the efforts of Mike Tennick who took 4 for 31.

None of the Neyland batsmen got going after tea as Dai Jones ripped through the batting line-up with a 4 for 12 spell. The other wickets were shared. Teenager Ryan Hayward took 2 for 12 on his Pembroke debut and there were two wickets each for Paul Rogers and Danny Williams.

Consistent batting took Lamphey Seconds to a five-wicket win at Whitland, after Whitland Seconds had been bowled out for 162. Peter Wright anchored the Whitland innings with 46, including seven 4s, and he featured in a first wicket stand of 69 with Andrew Williams, who chipped in with 19. Three other Whitland batsmen reached double figures as Simon Davies scored 33, Carl Stephenson 15 and Gwyn Phillips 12 not out.

Hassan took 3 for 34 for Lamphey Seconds, with support from Keith Silcox, Andrew Skeels and Ali, who picked up two wickets each.

Sean Lynch took 2 for 41 for Whitland Seconds.

Division Five

Kilgetty won their away match against Narberth Thirds by 98 runs and as a result have taken over the leadership of the Division Five table.

Skipper Graham Jenkins declared at 179 for 7. He had scored quickly in his innings of 62, which included two 6s and eight 4s, and was full of praise for the quality of both wicket and outfield at the Llanddewi Velfrey ground.

Another quick scoring batsman, Duane Reynolds, scored 55 and Craig Hurst 21. Young Sam Mills was the Narberth bowler to trouble the free scoring Kilgetty batsmen most in his 3 for 17 spell.

Bob Simons staved off the inevitable for as long as possible in his back to the wall innings of 62. It was all over quite quickly after he was bowled by Steve Merchant with the total on 81 and the remaining two wickets fell in quick succession without any addition to the total.

Duane Reynolds took 4 for 15, spinner Mike Johns 3 for 19 and Steve Merchant 2 for 9.

In the circumstances, Kilgetty did not miss the services of economical bowler Brian Slate, who was performing in the Carmarthen Amateur Operatic production of 'Copacabana'.

Whitland Thirds held on for a draw at 79 for 7 in response to a Hook Seconds total of 177 for 5.

Nigel Badham top scored with 55, Sion Thomas was not far behind with 48, Dean Boswell was 29 not out and Brennan Lay weighed in with 25.

Iestyn Scourfield took 2 for 16 for the visitors.

Whitland Thirds had little to offer in reply on the day apart from a defiant first wicket partnership of 45 from the father and son team of Arwyn and Jonathan Thomas.

Simon Brick and Nick Absolam picked up two wickets each, with Absolam conceding just three runs.

St. Florence crashed to an eight-wicket defeat at home to Haverfordwest Thirds after being bundled out for 78. Four Haverfordwest bowlers collected two wickets each, namely Stephen H. Phillips, Simon May, James Morris and Richard Morgan.

For the Saints, R. P. Rice, Malcolm Ruff and Steve Hughes each got in before all three were out for 15 apiece.

Richard James and James Brace were the wicket-takers for the Saints.

Iwan Perkins scored 26 and Owen Cox 23 in the Stackpole total. Paul Brooks bowled tightly to finish with three for eight in six overs and Huw Thomas took three for 25.

Eighteen-year-old Richard Haines led the Saundersfoot victory bid with a hard hitting innings of 76, which included a six and 11 fours. Huw Thomas, who has made a welcome return to active duty this season, had a useful knock of 22.

Iwan Perkins took 3 for 36 for Stackpole Seconds.

Riaan Strydon also got amongst the runs for the Hundleton team with 35, but lacked the necessary support, apart from Peter McKay, who scored 15.
