Division One

Carew dominated to such an extent as to scoop all of the draw points in their Dragon Sports Pembrokeshire County Cricket League Division One encounter at Lamphey on Saturday.

Continuing where they had left off in the Jubilee Cup the previous week, the Carew batsmen scored at just over four an over to reach a total of 198 for five.

Openers Ian Sefton and Nick Scourfield looked untroubled and had added 85 for the first wicket before Sefton was trapped leg before wicket by the gentle swing of Hywel Gibbs after reaching 43.

Scourfield went on in his own untroubled style to reach 79 with a six and nine 4s before he was trapped in front of the wickets by Lamphey skipper Daniel Sutton.

Robert Scourfield had joined his brother at the crease and the pair had added 81 before Nick Scourfield fell.

Robert Scourfield stroked his way to 42 and then there was a late flurry of wickets as Carew looked for cheap runs, with two of the wickets falling to Umair Akhtar.

Lamphey started brightly with Peter Hall and Umair Akhtar at the crease, but when the partnership was broken the middle order was blown away by Robert Scourfield in a spell of 4 for 18 and Lamphey had to fight to stay in the game.

Newcomer Sami Mohammad Ali scored 18 not out and was joined at the end by Will Silcox when the Lamphey innings closed on a total of 120 for 8.

Peter Hall had scored 30 before being bowled by Robert Scourfield, Umair Akhtar scored 27 and Mark Yea also scored 27 when Lamphey staged a rearguard action.

Simon Wood ended with a return of 2 for 35 for Carew.

Cresselly dominated their drawn game at Lawrenny where Lawrenny were also denied a share of the draw points.

Left-hander Simon Cole stroked 11 fours in his innings of 65 and was supported by Julian Arthur who scored 22 in a second wicket partnership of 66.

Skipper Lyn Richards reached 50 not out, supported by Ryan Lewis with 23 in a fifth wicket partnership of 68, and the other useful contribution was that of Phil Williams with 28.

Eventually, Cresselly reached a formidable total of 225 for 7. Spinner Ian Jenkins took 3 for 56 for Lawrenny.

In reply, Lawrenny struggled for runs after Steffan Jenkins and Lyn Richards made the early breakthrough.

Christian Phillips retired hurt, but later came back to help save the day for Lawrenny with his undefeated innings of 27. Skipper Robert Williams scored 22, with Andrew Cole Snr. and Ian Jenkins picking up 16 apiece.

The Lawrenny innings ended on a total of 116 for 8, with Simon Cole picking up two late wickets at a personal cost of three runs. Steffan Jenkins ended with a return of 2 for 19.

Newly-promoted Saundersfoot had an interesting encounter at home to Whitland who had to fight for Division One survival at the end last season.

The visitors built up a total of 206 for 6 and were indebted to David Lee and Paul Davies who added 94 for the second wicket.

Lee reached 55 with six 4s and a six and the left-handed Davies fell just one short of his half century after hitting a six and seven 4s.

Mark Lee maintained the momentum with 28 and Colin John had a brisk innings of 29 not out at the end.

Danny Caine was the pick of the Saundersfoot bowlers with figures of 3 for 44 and skipper Chris Parker picked up two wickets.

When Paul Mansbridge and Ian Poole were at the crease things were looking quite bright for Saundersfoot, although Poole had been fortunate to survive a chance when he had scored three.

He went on to score 42 off just 36 deliveries before being one of the many batsmen who have been deceived by the flight and spin of Paul Webb over the years.

Mansbridge was bowled by Mark Lee for 58, but the middle and lower order fell away after the Mansbridge-Poole partnership had been broken.

Spinner Edward John took 3 for 18 and there were two wickets each for Paul Webb and Mark Lee.

Narberth travelled to Llangwm and faced a rather unfamiliar looking Llangwm team with a number of regulars from previous seasons missing for a variety of reasons.

Wayne Howells and Peter Davies gave the visitors an excellent start. Davies has returned to the club from Llechryd and he scored 40 before being bowled by Richard Brock after hitting three 4s and three 6s.

Howells fell to a Darren Brick and Andrew Harries combination for 27, but Richard Adams anchored one end and scored 42 with six 4s before becoming the sixth batsman out with the total on 145.

Mike Scale (16), Richard Howell (14 not out) and Ian Hughes (13) each played useful supporting roles.

For Llangwm, young Andrew Brock had an excellent return of 4 for 22 from six overs.

Llangwm were slightly off the pace in chasing the Narberth total, despite losing few wickets and eventually settled for a draw on a total of 168 for 4.

Ian Gow fell early, being caught by Michael Scale from the bowling of Ian Hughes, but 13-year-old Stephen Inward joined Jo Jo Francis at the crease and kept the Narberth bowlers at bay during a patient innings of just over two hours during which he scored 21.

Francis was dismissed for 44 with the total on 48 and Andrew Harries had an attacking innings of 80 with five 6s and eight 4s from 95 deliveries before he was caught by Peter Davies off the bowling of Ian Hughes.

Although the father-and-son combination of Martin and Chris Inward were together until the close, they were unable to increase the tempo to give Llangwm a win, and Chris Inward was 12 not out at the end.

Narberth skipper Ian Hughes ended with figures of 3 for 40.

Haverfordwest lead the Division One table after being the only side to win on Saturday.

Visitors St. Ishmaels were bowled out for 106, despite a fighting innings of 39 not out from Andrew Williams. Earlier, Andrew Palmer scored 29 and Keith Pawlett 15.

Paceman Simon Williams took 4 for 17 from his 11 overs, and spinner Clive Tucker took 3 for 21.

Haverfordwest passed the Tish total without difficulty for the loss of just three wickets.

Jonathan Griffiths opened the batting for the Town with Andrew Phillips and scored 11 in his first league knock after coming out of retirement. The consistent Andrew Phillips went on to score 35, supported by Phil Kirkby with a breezy 29 and Karl Rhead was 28 not out.

Division Two

Burton batsmen Gareth Bevan and Richard Scriven are the types of players either to come off or fail. During the course of the season both are likely to have a number of good knocks, but rarely together.

Unfortunately, for Carew bowlers on Saturday, the fates favoured the two burly batsmen who both scored at an amazing rate and were impossible to bowl at.

Bevan scored 82 with six 6s and nine 4s from just 38 deliveries to leave Scriven somewhat in the shade, although his innings of 48 had been scored from just 26 deliveries, after he survived a life on his first ball.

Experienced all-rounder Steve Jones chipped in with 36, including seven 4s, as Burton aggregated 240 runs for the loss of six wickets.

Kerry Waters picked up three wickets and two victims fell to Martin Scourfield.

Despite the efforts of skipper Ceri Davies with 42, supported by Martin Scourfield with 34, the Carew Seconds innings faltered and the home team were bowled out for 141 with just three balls remaining.

In fairness, the Carew batsmen had adopted a positive approach and went for the runs, but wickets fell at regular intervals as the Burton bowlers shared out the wickets.

Steve Jones followed up his useful knock to take 4 for 35, and there were two wickets each for Kevin Roberts, John Scale and James Venables.

In the second half of last season, Maenclochog showed what they could do in Division Two and at the start of this season they surprised many pundits after achieving a 45-run win at Pembroke.

Pembroke were relegated from Division One last season as were Hook, and both teams got off to the wrong start with defeats in their first matches in Division Two.

Maenclochog batted first and reached a total of 155 for 7. Richard Morris top scored with an attractive innings of 49, including five 4s, while Paul Bowen supported with 24, as did Gary Nicholas in his knock of 15.

The father-and-son combination of Nigel and Perry Phillips accounted for five of the wickets. Spinner Nigel took 3 for 31 and paceman Perry took 2 for 29.

The Pembroke batsmen never really got going against an accurate Maenclochog attack. Left-hander William Davies top scored with 26, supported by Martin Fletcher with a brisk 17 and Nigel Phillips was 15 not out when Pembroke were bowled out for 110.

Medium pacer Kevin Davies finished with 3 for 27. His rugby colleague Jamie Bohata took 3 for 35 and Richard Morris followed up his batting to take 2 for 12.

Division Three

Narberth Seconds had a convincing six-wicket win at home to Llangwm Seconds after dismissing the visitors for 68.

Adam Davies with 20 was the only Llangwm batsman to offer resistance as Narberth skipper Mathew Davies took 4 for 28, backed up by two of the younger players. Thomas Richards took 3 for 14 and Ceri Davies 3 for 13.

Fifteen-year-old Luke Brock caused the Narberth batsmen some problems in their reply and ended with splendid figures of 4 for 9 from his seven overs.

However, the experienced Peter Hughes steadied the Narberth innings with his undefeated innings of 20 after opening the batting, and Will Davidson looked out for runs at the other end when he came in at number six and reached 32 not out.

Manorbier produced a good all-round performance at Cresselly to win by four wickets after Cresselly Seconds totalled 154 for 9.

Fifteen-year-old Andrew Harris favoured the boundary shots in his knock of 45, as he found the boundary eight times and cleared it once.

Left-hander Stephen Thomas chipped in with 33. The experienced Selwyn Cole reached 17 not out, and Andrew Brace made a useful contribution of 15.

Phil Kidney gave the visitors' attack the all important cutting edge with a return of 5 for 39, backed up by Jeremy Smith with 2 for 20.

Consistent early order batting resulted in the visitors reaching a total of 156 for 4. Steve Flook had a match-winning innings of 54, while Neil Powling had an important 24, and Jeremy Smith was not far behind with 22.

Four of the Cresselly bowlers picked up a wicket each and no-one was more delighted than 14-year-old Jacob Davies, who took 1 for 4.

Hundleton had a comfortable 64-run win at home to Johnston. Batting first, the Hundleton team reached 140 for 6. Morgan Allen top scored with 54, backed up by Richard Allen (15), Jonathan Williams (14) and Mark Williams with 13.

In reply, Johnston were dispatched for 76, with Gary Stephens 16 not out. Jason Oatley asked the right questions with a stint of 4 for 14, and Nigel Arthur bowled a nagging line and length to end with 3 for 11 from 12 accurate overs.

Division Four

Lawrenny Seconds defeated Carew Thirds by four wickets in their game at Kilgetty.

The Carew team has a lot of young players with a number of older heads. One of the experienced players, Martyn Cole, opened the Carew innings and was 66 not out with five 4s and a six in a total of 109 for 6.

Spinner Phil Cole took two of the wickets to fall.

Simon Cole with 24 and Steve Campbell with 23 were the main contributors in the Lawrenny Seconds innings of 112 for 4, with James Phillips and William Morris also reaching double figures.

Scott Hemlich took 2 for 23 and Rhys Davies 2 for 11 for the Carew team.

Pembroke Dock were promoted from Division Five as champions last season, with Neyland Seconds as runners-up.

The teams met at Pembroke Dock on Saturday and the Dock started the new season in fine form with a three-wicket win in the last over after Neyland Seconds had reached a total of 169 for 6.

Graham Keen scored a fluent innings of 65, supported by Arthur Arron who came out of retirement to score 39 and Martin Jones with 28. Spinner Phil Scott bowled well and took 3 for 18 and John Davies also picked up two wickets.

John Davies was also in form with the bat and his innings of 68 with a six and 11 fours played an important part in the Dock reaching a total of 170 for 7.

Opener Nick Daley with 21 and Neil Bulley with 18 played supporting roles.

For the visitors, Andrew Jones took 3 for 41 and Mike Tennick 2 for 31.

At Whitland, the visitors Pembroke Seconds were bowled out for 179.

David Scourfield held the innings together with his knock of 65, supported by Simon Smith Wrench with 33 and opener Kevin Jenkins with 24.

Seventeen-year-old Rhys Bowen took 5 for 29 with his medium pacers, with Owen Edwards and Shaun Lynch each picking up two wickets.

Whitland Seconds reached a winning total of 184 for 6 in the 30th over, with Simon Davies hitting the winning six in his undefeated innings of 54. The Whitland innings gathered momentum when he arrived at the crease at the fall of the fifth wicket.

Earlier, all-rounder Nick Davies scored 56 with a six and nine 4s, and the experienced Danny Griffiths scored 21.

For the Pembroke team, Clive Thomas took 2 for 43 and David Scourfield 2 for 28.

Lamphey Seconds were in control of a drawn game at Camrose and Spittal following an excellent all-round contribution by skipper Andrew Skeels. He scored 63 in a Lamphey Seconds total of 207 for 6, backed up by his predecessor Grant Cole with 52 not out.

Skeels was also in form with the ball as he took 4 for 19 with his left arm orthodox spinners. However, Arthur Kendrick with 40 and Adrian Harries with 25 did enough to secure a draw for Camrose and Spittal Seconds.

Division Five

The match between St. Florence and Narberth Thirds did not last long, and was all over before the tea interval after the visitors had been bowled out for a disappointing total of 25.

Skipper Rob Simons was the only batsman in double figures with 11.

R. P. Rice, who had a spell with Narberth during the period when St. Florence were out of the league, did most of the damage in his spell of 5 for 7. James Brace took 3 for 4 and Richard Jones 2 for 8.

St. Florence openers R. P. Rice and Tony Derbyshire knocked off the winning runs to give the Saints a 10-wicket win. The end was delayed while the openers waited for the right chance and Derbyshire hit a six to pick up a bonus point as well as winning the game.

Kilgetty were made to fight all the way at St. Ishmaels before securing a narrow two-wicket win.

St. Ishmaels Seconds scored 118 before being dismissed, with Glyn Griffiths reaching 33 before being caught by Andrew Cope off the bowling of Mike Johns, and Scott Findlay scored 29.

Economical as ever, Brian Slate took 5 for 27 from 12 overs, supported by Steve Marchant with 2 for 13 and spinner Mike Johns with 2 for 27.

The visitors seemed to be coasting to victory during a fourth-wicket partnership of 69 between skipper Graham Jenkins and Adge John. However, when Jenkins was caught by wicket-keeper Glyn Griffiths off the bowling of Daniel Flynn for 63, after hitting a six and six 4s, the middle order collapsed.

Fortunately, Henry Probert and Simon Evans kept their nerve at the end to pick up a valuable win for Kilgetty in their first season back in Division Five, with the added bonus of an extra batting point.

For Tish, Thomas Richards took 4 for 34, Lenny Rees 2 for 15 and Daniel Flynn 2 for 37.

Whitland Thirds were home to Llanrhian Seconds at the Llanddewi Velfrey ground.

The visitors were bowled out for 111, with Peter Sterling top scoring on 33, supported by Luke Jones on 21.

Seventeen-year-old Tom Edwards took 3 for 27 and 14-year-old Carl Smith 2 for 11 for the Whitland team.

In reply, the Whitland Thirds innings did not get off the ground and Whitland were bowled out for just 46, with Daniel Rowlands top scoring on 14.

For the visitors, Gavin Robb took 3 for 4 and Mathew Bennett 3 for 17.

Division Six

Saundersfoot Seconds had a comfortable five-wicket win away to Crymych Seconds who were bowled out for 82.

Joe Duffy took 4 for 11, 13-year-old Simon Stanford took 4 for 10 and Joe Kidney took 2 for 14. Osain Wynn was the main contributor to the Crymych total with 23.

The visitors reached 84 for 5 in reply, with teenagers Richard Haines scoring 25, Dan Brace 23 and Joe Duffy 19.

Hundleton Seconds won by 20 runs away to Burton Thirds after being bowled out for 165. Pete MacKay played an important part with 43 not out. Tim Phillips weighed in with 42 and Colin James a valuable contribution of 38.

Ian Woods with 3 for 34 and Rod Jones with 3 for 57 were the pick of the Burton bowlers.

The pair did their best to save the day when Burton batted. Woods needed more support after he had scored 79, and Rod Jones had a defiant innings of 42 not out. John Harries was the leading wicket-taker for Hundleton Seconds with a return of 3 for 21.
