There's to be a new name on Narberth's Mayoral chain. The town's representative on Pembrokeshire County Council, Clr. Wynne Evans, has been elected the town's Mayor-elect. Narberth born and bred, Clr. Evans will succeed current Mayor, Clr. David Norcross, when his term of office comes to an end next month. A town councillor for a total of 17 years, Clr. Evans, the current Deputy Mayor, attended the town's primary and grammar schools. He is a former chairman of Narberth Chamber of Trade, Civic Week and Winter Carnival and is actively involved in many local groups and organisations, including the town's Food Festival and Young Farmers Club movement. He has been the town's county councillor for nearly two years. Meanwhile, Clr. Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, current chairman of Narberth Civic Week, was elected his deputy. Clr. Rogers, the daughter of former town councillor, Mr. Don Morgan, was proposed for the post by Clr. Evans and seconded by Clr. Langen. Mayor, Clr. Norcross asked if there were any other nominations, but when there were not, Clr. Mrs. Rogers was appointed. The traditional Mayor-making ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 2. Footnote: The Observer understands that the appointment of the Deputy Mayor was overshadowed by some controversial discussions which took place outside the council chamber. In a statement made at Tuesday night's meeting, Clr. Colin Williams asked that all appointments for the position of Deputy Mayor be discussed and voted on around the council table and all members be asked if they wished to stand. "Events in the last week do not enhance this council," he said. "The position of Deputy Mayor is a very important one and must not be decided upon outside this room." Meanwhile, on accepting the position of Mayor- elect, Clr. Evans said that the last three weeks had been 'horrendous' and said he had been threatened with resignations over the matter. "I hope we can put all this bad feeling behind us and now move on." After the meeting, Clr. Norcross said that following the proper procedure, when only one nomination was made from the council, he was more than happy to invite Clr. Mrs. Rogers to become the Deputy Mayor of Narberth at next month's meeting. "I am sure that Clr. Mrs. Rogers is an excellent choice and she is well-known for her commitment and service to Narberth, not least being chair of the Civic Week committee and an active member of the Friends of Narberth CP School. "I believe she will enjoy her new role and not only be an asset to Narberth, but also a great support to Mayor-elect Clr. Evans."
