Country Music fans flocked to the Queen's Hall, Narberth, last week for the return of Irish Country Music star Brendan Shine and his Show Band. The evening was again expertly organised by PJ Promotions and everyone went away thoroughly delighted with yet another grand evening of entertainment.
Demand for tickets ensured another sell-out three weeks ago and, although the doors were not due to open until 7.30 pm, a queue started to form at 6.50 pm and soon stretched onto the pavement outside.
First in the queue were 74-year-old Jim Hughes and his wife, Margaret, from Carew Newton. "We wanted a good seat," said Jim, "and we had one". Jim also got an added bonus when he was able to have a chat with the amiable Irishman after the show. No doubt the state of Agriculture was discussed since, like Jim, Brendan Shine is a farmer when he gets back to his home in Athlone.
The evening kicked-off with the lovely singing voice of local Country star Sherri with her instrumentalists, the Sidekicks.
During the interval, Maria from Café Ole served up a delicious Irish stew, much enjoyed by all, and thanks to the generosity of the audience a raffle, won by Mrs. Margaret Evans, of Saundersfoot, raised £125 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
After the break, the audience soon got on their dancing shoes when the bubbling Brendan, as energetic as ever, quickly built up a rapport and put them through their paces with a non-stop repertoire of favourites, old and new.
"One of the best audiences we've had for a long time," said Brendan, adding: "It's always a pleasure to come here to Narberth and meet our old friends."
The no smoking policy introduced by PJ Promotions at their events has been welcomed.
"We took a gamble," said Peter Jones, of PJ Promotions, "but our decision has been justified and it is now much appreciated by the audience. It will now be a permanent feature of our productions."
Whilst PJ Promotions regard Narberth as the centre for their events, it is intended that events will be organised at other venues in the county.
"Irish star Ann Breen has been booked for March," said Peter Jones, "so please watch the press for details and, of course, book early."
Amazingly, after more than 30 years in show business, Brendan Shine shows no sign of slowing down and most people agreed that his performance at the Queen's Hall was one of the best he had given. Narberth was his 39th concert on a UK tour that has lasted about a month and now in its last week.
At 12.30 in the morning outside the Queen's Hall, Brendan and his band loaded up the huge amount of equipment they transport around the country and headed for Stafford for a concert followed by gigs at Birmingham and London, before crossing the Irish Sea in time for Christmas and a series of TV appearances.
