Country Cars drivers and organisers in Pembrokeshire have been recognised for their help in transporting many thousands of residents around the county over the years. Vice-chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Clr. Robin Evans, recently held a reception at County Hall for the volunteers who had achieved more than 10 years' service, to thank them for their work. He said the success of the scheme relied completely on the goodwill and support of the volunteers, who give up their own time to organise and provide transport. "Getting out and about is a significant factor in maintaining the independence and improving the quality of life of older, disabled and housebound people," he said. "Yet many people are unable to make those essential journeys such as getting to the shops, or visiting the doctor, family and friends. "Country Cars is a Pembrokeshire-wide service for people who cannot get there any other way. "Thanks to the sterling efforts of the drivers, a great deal of people make those vital journeys every single day." The WRVS also plays a vital role through its management of the scheme. It not only manages the day-to-day running of the service but also supports, helps and recruits the volunteers. The scheme relies on approximately 80 WRVS volunteers who organise and transport over 16,000 passengers every year. "This reception gives us the opportunity to thank the WRVS as a true and loyal partner in providing the Pembrokeshire Country Cars service," added Clr. Evans. "It also gives us the chance to express our appreciation of the vital role and worthwhile efforts of the volunteers gathered here today."
