Sights are set on major milestones in Pembroke Dock's remarkable history as the community counts down to its 200th anniversary in 2014.

Exciting plans are now being prepared for special events throughout 2014 to mark the bicentenary and these are being directed by a team headed by a former Mayor of Pembroke Dock, Clr. Pam George.

The Pembroke Dock Bicentenary Group has appointed Martin Cavaney to the part-time co-ordinator's role. Martin, well-known throughout Pembrokeshire as a press photographer, has long involvement in local heritage projects and is chairman of the Gun Tower Museum and a trustee of the Sunderland Trust.

"We have an outstanding history in this community," said Martin, "and the origins of the Gun Tower Museum and Sunderland Trust projects can be traced to major heritage events held here in years gone by. Many people will remember the hugely successful Forties Week of 1987 and the Naval Week of 1991 and we have many ideas and plans to make 2014 a marvellous year to remember.

"Anyone, individuals or groups and organisations, who wish to get involved are welcome to get in contact now - 2014 is not very far away."

On Sunday, the Mayor and Mayoress, Clr. and Mrs. Peter Kraus, Clr. Pam George and Martin Cavaney travelled to the International Alvis Owners Club Meeting at Llancaiach Fawr, near Cardiff.

The Alvis marque was founded by T. G. John, who was born in Pembroke Dock and trained as a naval architect in the Royal Dockyard.

There they were warmly welcomed by members of the club, and the Mayor, Clr. Peter Kraus, presented a town plaque to Edgar Shields, the club president, and invited the members to hold a meeting in Pembroke Dock in 2014.

Pembroke Dock was Wales' only Royal Dockyard town, developing alongside Pembroke Dockyard where over 260 ships were built for the Royal Navy between 1814 and 1926, including five Royal Yachts. It was also a garrison town, home to many famous regiments in the British Army, and for nearly 30 years (1930-1959) was an RAF flying boat station, the largest in the world in wartime. In its dockyard heyday, it was one of the most prosperous towns in Wales.
