Sir,
I was saddened to see such a lovely building as Grosvenor House on fire in Whitland last Wednesday evening.
The fire services from Whitland, Crymych, Sketty, Carmarthen and Narberth were absolutely outstanding for ensuring that no one was in the building and bringing the blaze under control without damage to adjoining properties.
I was extremely impressed to see them at work and grateful we have them so close at hand. Thanks also to the Tenby firemen who covered the early hours.
Local emergency cover is provided by a dedicated team of retained personnel. Anyone interested in providing this challenging service to the community please contact Nigel at the fire station in Whitland.
The police were also quickly at hand to organise public safety and investigations. The community police officers were well known and it was good to be reassured about the safety of nearby residents who had been evacuated. Thanks to the local hostleries and takeaways who made teas and food for the emergency services. It was a long shift for everyone concerned.
Finally, I am heartened to see the prompt action being taken by the county council, who own the site, and county council oficers are keeping me up to date with progress.
County Clr. Sue Allen
