An ambitious development proposed for one of South Pembrokeshire's best-known beach cafés is 'not in keeping with the area,' say local councillors. A Cardiff construction company has submitted a planning application to Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority which seeks permission to demolish the Fountains Café at Tenby's South Beach and redevelop the area into 19 holiday apartments, beach related retail and café facilities and associated car parking spaces. However, when asked for their comments this week, members of Tenby Town Council voiced objections on grounds that the scheme was 'not in keeping with the conservation area'. "The scale is too large for the site," said Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter after looking at the plans at Tuesday night's meeting. Her colleague, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, added: "I don't think the height is suitable. It is one storey too high and the design of the building is not in keeping with the locality." In addition, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown also said it was 'not sympathetic' to the area. Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward, meanwhile, suggested the council invite the applicant to meet with them and members agreed. Comments on a further application to relocate a grade II listed structure at the end of South Beach Car Park to a central piazza area, former Fountains Café, South Beach, Tenby, also submitted by Mr. Nick Kelly, were deferred until a decision on the main applications was resolved.
