The applicant behind plans to turn St. Catherine's Island in Tenby into a visitor attraction has said that he would be more than happy to meet with local councillors again to discuss his proposals further.

Members of Tenby Town Council last week objected to a planning application submitted to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority by Mr. Peter Prosser, of the Tenby Island Project, for a change of use of the fort at St. Catherine's Island on Castle Beach, to a visitor attraction.

While welcoming plans to bring the fort and island back into public use, councillors recommended refusal of the application in its current form, stating that there was insufficient detail on the type of visitor attraction proposed to allow them to fully assess the suitability of the site and the impact of such a proposal on this important listed building.

At Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, the town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies, said that he had received correspondence from the applicant, Mr. Prosser, who wished to respond to the views members had given on the plans and inform them of some details on part of the visitor attraction proposed.

"I can understand that you may want to know what kind of exhibition and for the benefit of the town council I can tell you that this is a mix of historical, nature, interactive interpretation and visual interest," he said.

"A good example of the kind of exhibit is the underwater cameras and microphones, which will enable you to see and hear under the waves around the island, and their positioning is part of the planning application.

"This is a small part of our nature proposals, but we want to look below and above the sea and one of the reasons that we'd have long opening hours is that we propose to have a number of high-powered telescopes that will enable our visitors to take part in tours of the heavens. Obviously these can only happen late at night," continued Mr. Prosser, who said that he was regularly travelling to Tenby and would be happy to meet with councillors again.

Councillors agreed that they would be willing to meet with the developer again if he wished to give any further presentations on the project in the future.
