Town councillors have taken a dim view of a request to introduce late-night lighting at Tenby's Jubilee Play Park.
The proposal, which was put to the town council by the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, was discussed at Tuesday night's meeting of the council, after the policing team had informed the town clerk that they had experienced problems recently with local skateboarders using the town's multi-storey car park late at night, because the skate section of the Jubilee Play Park was too dark for skaters to see this time of year.
"The policing team have asked us to consider introducing lighting at the park, but it's not as simple as just putting a set of lights up, as we'd have to consider planning permission, where we'd get access to power for the lights, and also whether residents in that area would want any form of lighting in the park late at night," explained the town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies.
"The police have suggested that they would be prepared to look at some form of funding to help the town council, but again this would be something that would take time," he continued.
Following a recent incident when vandals struck at the play park, spray painting the wall, skate ramps and the rubberised play surface, the Neighbourhood Policing Team had also suggested that lighting at the facility could deter such further incidents.
The town clerk told members that the police were continuing to investigate the incident and that it wasn't the only vandalism that had occurred in the area and that the police were aware of names of people associated with the 'tags' used in the park
Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown said that the Friends of the Jubilee Play Park committee were not really in any position to consider funding a lighting project at the moment, as £12-13,000 was still owed to the town council for the play park scheme.
"We're not in a position to help the police with this really. It's unfortunate that skaters are using the multi-storey in the evening, but it's not our fault that it gets dark at around 4.30 pm this time of year, and it's something that all play parks have to deal with really," she remarked.
"If young kids are using the play park later than 5 pm at this time of year when it's dark, then I'd suggest that their parents should go and get them in anyway.
"Even if we had the funding to put lighting up there anyway, I'd suggest that we shouldn't, as we wouldn't want to encourage anyone to use it later than 9.30 to 10 pm, as I know the residents in that area wouldn't appreciate that.
"It's easy for the police to make the comments that they have, but it's just not viable," she continued.
Clr. Mrs. Brown went onto thank Deer Park Baptist Church for a recent donation of £500 to the Friends of the Jubilee Play Park, and a further £50 donation from people who use the church for guitar lessons.
