Skateboarders in the south of the county have been given a new lease of life - thanks to the county council.

A £1,250 Rural Development Scheme grant from the authority has been used by Saundersfoot skate club to build new ramps for its 45 members.

The ramps were used in the main hall at Tenby Leisure Centre for the first time last weekend.

The eight ramps, which have steel frames and a wooden surface, were built for the club by welder, Danny Leader, with some of the materials donated by Tenby-based engineering company Celtic Vacuum.

Said club secretary, Jason Downes: "We've had some great support and help, and not only from Pembrokeshire County Council.

"Members and their parents have organised a variety of events, raising about £1,000 to go towards the construction of an outdoor park.

"Many of them took part in the New Year's Day Swim in Saundersfoot, and there was also a disco at the Sands Club. The owners provided the premises free for the evening and the DJ, Wayne Wharton, didn't charge us for his services.

"Another of the club's friends, Ben Paris, transported the ramps to Tenby Leisure Centre where they've given us a great deal on the booking charge for the main hall. We've also had assistance from Saundersfoot Community Council.

"Everyone has pulled together and the RDS grant cheque from Pembrokeshire County Council is the icing on the cake."

The skate club eventually hopes to establish its own park at the rear of the Regency Hall in Saundersfoot.
