Pembroke Town Council is calling for an urgent review of a notorious accident blackspot.

Road safety at the junction of the A4075 and A477 road at Nash Fingerpost came under the spotlight at last Thursday's council meeting.

The Nash Fingerpost junction links the trunk road to the A4075, which is the principal route for traffic to and from Pembroke and beyond to the Angle Peninsular with its oil refinery and power station.

Clr. Mrs. Pauline Waters opened the discussion by stating she has received numerous complaints from local motorists and long distance delivery drivers concerned about the layout of the junction which many consider to be an accident blackspot.

A letter has now been sent to the South Wales Trunk Road Agency, in which town clerk, Hugh Colley, said: "Pembroke Town Council is of the opinion that the current road layout, lack of signage and road markings, coupled with excessive speeds approaching the junction from Pembroke (A4075), is a significant contributory factor to the poor accident collision record/near misses at this location.

"In particular, problems are caused by long vehicles crossing the westbound carriageway when turning right from Pembroke."

Mr. Colley continued: "Following discussion, it was resolved that I write to the Trunk Road Agency to express concern regarding the poor road traffic collision record at this location and request that an urgent review be conducted with a view to modifying the existing configuration."

The letter has also been copied to AM Angela Burns, MP Simon Hart and County Councillors John Allen-Mirehouse and Clive Collins.

Footnote: Since last Thursday's meeting, it has transpired that the Trunk Roads Agency commissioned Pembrokeshire County Council to carry out a series of draft recommendations to address safety issues. The recommendations were submitted in November 2010.
