Councillors in Tenby have given their backing to a joint scheme by Pembrokeshire County Council and Dyfed Powys Police that would prohibit alcohol consumption within certain designated public places in the resort, providing the police with extra powers to deal more effectively with anti-social behaviour in the town. Correspondence on the scheme, which is currently the subject of consultation, was received by the town council on Tuesday night from Dr. Steven Jones, chair of the county council's 'Safer Pembrokeshire Partnership' . "The effect of the order is to prohibit the consumption of alcohol within designated public places in certain circumstances," Dr. Jones explained. "I would like to reassure businesses and residents that this is a discretionary power; only those drinkers behaving, or likely to behave, in an anti-social manner will be targeted," he continued, stating that the order would be effective from December of this year and reviewed again in January, 2017. Clr. Mrs. Kerri Durham said she would fully back the order in town. "This is long overdue and I can't wait for them to implement it." Her colleague, Clr. Lawrence Blackhall, gave his support to the order, too, and said that his only concern was that he didn't want to see responsible people enjoying a drink on the beach as part of a barbecue categorised in the same way as someone drinking alcohol in an anti-social manner. "It doesn't affect the responsible drinkers, it will just give police officers and PCSOs the power to clampdown on people abusing the town in this manner," added Clr. Mike Evans.
