Tenby Town Council have backed the organiser of the Town Trails of Tenby in her bid to have her business properly sign-posted.

Mrs. Marion Davies wrote to the town council last week explaining that, because of the new Pembrokeshire County Council policy regarding roadside and kerbside signage, she had taken steps towards applying for planning permission to fix signs on the two town buildings closest to where her walks began.

Mrs. Davies explained that the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park had said that she may have difficulty in so much as the signs would not relate to the business on which they were fixed, but the county council had said that, if she could establish a precedent for the signs, based on how guided walks were signed in other parts of the country, then she could have a case, although she was "outside their book of rules regarding signs on the highway."

The only Wales Blue Badge guide in Pembrokeshire, Mrs. Davies said that 85 per cent of her business came from her signs, which not only advertised the business, but also indicated the starting points of her five various walks.

She had already been given permission by Mr. Rob Davies, of the Lifeboat Tavern, to fix a sign on the wall of the pub and was seeking permission from the Yorkshire Building Society for a similar sign at the top of Tudor Square.

However, as both buildings were listed, she wondered if Tenby Town Council could assist by using their powers under the General Development Order to erect the signs on her behalf.

This would involve the town council making the application for planning permission on her behalf, although Mrs. Davies stressed that she would fund the costs and the making of the signs.

"I think we should support Mrs. Davies in her venture," opined Clr. Stuart Fecci. "Hers is a unique situation in Pembrokeshire.

"This is Mrs. Davies's lifeblood, it is her business. Just because she doesn't work out of an office, I cannot see why she cannot have signage."

Clr. Mickey Folland agreed.

"I applaud Mrs. Davies for taking this action," he said. "We supported her wholeheartedly when she set up in business and we should continue to support her as much as we can."

"She provides an excellent service to the community and visitors and we should support her," agreed Clr. Miss Lis James.
