A converted try in the fourth minute of time added on was enough to give the students of UWIC the final word over Narberth in this nail-biting top-of-the table clash at the Lewis Lloyd ground on Saturday.

Having snatched the lead themselves in the last minute of proper time, the Otters looked on course to retain their unbeaten tag at the top of National League division two, until UWIC hooker Danny Wilson sneaked over and fullback Rhys Edwards added the extras.

Although Narberth were disappointed to lose their unbeaten crown, they will be the first to admit that the Students just about deserved the win for making more of the chances offered to them.

The Otters, on the other hand, lacked cohesion at times, were playing too loose at deep and were frustrated not only by an inability to hold on to passes, but also by some questionable refereeing decisions against them.

Narberth took an early lead through an Aled Davies penalty, before Edwards put the visitors back on terms with a similar strike at the other end.

Jamie Bohata came close to edging the Otters back in front following good combination play, but failed to hold on to the greasy ball with the line in his sights.

UWIC prop Ryan Hopkins had no such misfortune at the other end, however, bagging a try close to the end of the first half which Edwards converted.

Narberth countered strongly in the closing stages before the break with some driving scrums, but were thwarted despite crossing the line on two occasions, as the referee was unsighted.

After the change around, Davies reduced the arrears with another penalty and was unlucky to see a further attempt from long range strike an upright and bounce the wrong way.

Otters number eight Gareth Bennett uncharacteristically took the wrong option in trying to link with wing Andrew Jones instead of exploiting a three-man advantage to his right, which denied the homesters a golden opportunity to snatch the lead, before Edwards was again on target with a penalty to make it 13-6 to UWIC.

With Emori Katalau beginning to exert more control in the linesout, Chris Macdonald and Simon Daniel combining well in the half-back berths and acting skipper Andrew Bowen leading by example throughout, Narberth began to look more dangerous in the second half, but could find little way through a solid UWIC defence, although Davies managed to reduce the deficit to just one point with two well-taken penalties.

Daniel was against to the fore right at the end of proper time when he displayed his kicking skills by finding touch near the right corner.

A good take by Katalau allowed Narberth to set up the drive for hard-working back row man Alan Reynolds to score an unconverted try and put the Otters in a commanding position going into extra time.

Throughout the half, the Otters were thwarted by some curious refereeing decisions, including two against them for delaying the throw-in at linesout.

The second, against hooker Simon Delaney, was the most confusing.

With Delaney on the ground receiving treatment for an injury, the Narberth pack closed for a tactical huddle while waiting for the ensuing lineout.

When Delaney was back on his feet he went to check the call, only to be penalised for delaying the lineout!

However, the most confusing decision to the large crowd of Narberth faithful came in the fourth minute of injury time with UWIC pressing the Otters line.

The referee seemed to indicate advantage to the homesters on their 22, following an apparent knock-on during the UWIC attack.

However, he then changed his mind, allowing the students to ferry the ball out to Wilson to cross for the winning try, with Edwards rubbing salt in with the successful conversion.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Narberth travel to Rhymney for another key league fixture.

The supporters bus will leave the clubhouse at 12 noon.
