Local councillors have voiced concerns over an application to increase the extraction of marine aggregate from an area of deep water off the south coast of Wales.

The application from Llanelli Sand Dredging Ltd., which has been sent to the Welsh Assembly Government, came before members of Tenby Town Council at their meeting on Tuesday evening.

The applicants want to increase the maximum annual extraction at Nobel Banks to 500,000 tonnes per year, while keeping within the overall extraction limit of 3,000,000 tonnes over the original 10-year period (until 2016).

Speaking on the matter, Clr. Trevor Hallett said that dredging had had an adverse effect on Tenby's sand banks over the years and that he didn't think that there should be an increase.

Councillors agreed to strongly object to the proposals.
