This autumn, Pembrokeshire-based charity VC Gallery has launched Journey Together - a new programme of fully supported day trips designed to offer unpaid carers a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities.

Funded by the Time Out for Carers Fund, a partnership between PAVS, Pembrokeshire County Council, and the Welsh Government, this project is a heartfelt response to what carers in the local community have told us they need: time out, meaningful connection, and a chance to enjoy life beyond their caring role.

Over the coming months, Journey Together will offer a series of free, accessible outings to beautiful destinations across Pembrokeshire and beyond. Transport will be provided via The VC Gallery’s community minibus, with all entry fees and refreshments included – removing barriers that often prevent carers from taking time for themselves.

“Unpaid carers are the backbone of our communities,” said Steph Cross, Project Manager at The VC Gallery. “They give so much and often ask for so little. Journey Together is about giving something back — creating warm, sociable experiences where carers can relax, feel valued, and enjoy something for themselves. We know from previous projects how powerful even a simple day out can be.”

Some carers have already benefitted from early trips, including a beautiful boat trip with Pembrokeshire-based inclusive surf school Blue Horizons CIC, and an excursion to Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo, both of which received fantastic feedback. These early outings have shown just how transformative a few hours away from routine can be - and there’s much more to come.

“It means so much to get these chances,” said one participant. “We gave up driving when my partner became unwell, so without this minibus we wouldn’t be able to get to some locations.”

With places filling fast, carers are encouraged to get in touch as soon as possible so they don’t miss out while funding is still available.

Each outing is supported by trained staff and volunteers, and carers are welcome to attend with or without the person they care for. Destinations will include gardens, cafes, creative spaces, and heritage venues — all chosen in collaboration with carers to reflect their interests and needs.

This also presents an opportunity for carers to get involved. If you’re an unpaid carer living in Pembrokeshire - whether or not you’ve connected with The VC Gallery before - the charity would love to hear from you. Call 01646 685688, email [email protected] or pop into The VC Gallery, Britannia Road, Pembroke Dock. Note that spaces are limited and will be allocated as the itinerary develops, so early registration is recommended.

Based in Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest, the VC Gallery uses art and creative engagement to support veterans, carers, and the wider community. The charity believes in inclusion, expression and the power of connection to change lives.

The Journey Together project is made possible through the Time Out for Carers Fund, supported by the Welsh Government – AMSER, Pembrokeshire County Council, and PAVS (Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services).
