CHAIR of Carmarthenshire Council Cllr Dot Jones recently visited Canolfan Hywel Dda in Whitland to plant a replacement tree within the interpretive gardens. The tree overlooks the garden representing ‘contract’, reflecting one aspect of the Laws of Hywel Dda.

It was specially chosen because in historic times its timber was prized for making shields, as the wood was notably resistant to splitting when struck by arrows.

The six gardens also represent other elements of the Laws of Hywel Dda, including women, society, kingship, punishment and animals.

Councillor Jones was joined by committee members who care for the pocket gardens at the centre and County Councillor Sue Allen who was appointed by Carmarthenshire County Council to serve on the committee.

Afterwards, Cllr Jones visited the main building which houses the Peniarth exhibition and viewed a facsimile of the Boston manuscript. Cegin Fach Hywel, the on site café, kindly provided refreshments.
