FOR the first club walk of July, the walkers gathered at the Buffs club [RAOB] in Kilgetty. It was a lovely summer’s day, maybe even a bit too warm for brisk walking.

Brian, supported by Barbara, set a cracking pace down Ivy Chimney Lane and the Dramway at the head of the Speedies. Annie, backed by Chris, led the Steadies down Errox Hill at a much more measured pace. Everyone was quite warm by the time they reached Saundersfoot. As ever in the Summer, the village was very busy, but everyone managed to find somewhere for refreshments before making their way home again.

On the 11th, the latest heat wave was well into its stride. The most challenging part of the walk was the heat! 29 walkers gathered at Battery Gardens where shade was at a premium.

Barbara led the Speedies, backed by Kym, onto the South Beach hoping to find a little breeze. The Steadies, led by Marlene and Annie, took a short walk across the Esplanade down to the harbour then across the North Walk and up the zigzag. Everyone was looking forward to the Coffee Morning at Church House hosted by St Mary’s Hand Bell Ringers. They provided delicious homemade cakes, preserves and very welcome ice-cold drinks.

The following week, 34 walkers made their way to Laugharne despite the continuing heat wave. The walks were a real challenge in the heat.

The Speedies, led by Kym and backed by Jane, had to abandon their planned walk via the Dylan Thomas Birthday Walk, because of path erosion. They walked to the Dylan Thomas Boathouse and walked the coastal path largely under the trees. The Steadies, led by Chris who was supported by Marlene, chose the circular walk via Dylan Thomas’ grave. This route was partially shaded, so very pleasant in parts. Most of the walkers met afterwards at the Owl & Pussycat cafe for very welcome refreshments.

On the last Saturday of July, it was a lovely day for a sunny, summer beach walk. 29 members gathered outside Regency Hall and split into the usual two groups.

Jane and Brian led the smaller Speedy group round the harbour and onto Glen Beach. They surged towards Monkstone Head with great gusto. Annie, backed by Barbara, followed along behind at the head of the Steadies. As they turned a corner, they unexpectedly met the Speedies going the other way. The Speedies had discovered that a low neap tide doesn’t leave enough sand on Glen Beach to walk to Monkstone.

So Steps2Health formed one giant gaggle and headed back to the village and the all important refreshments.
