THIS year has brought a lot of good weather, but the sky on the first Saturday of October was a blue bowl. It was a fabulous day for a walk, not too warm and no wind at all. 34 Steps2Health members assembled at Battery Gardens.
The Steadies, led by Chris and backed by Marlene, walked via the golf club and South Beach to the Esplanade, Paragon and Cob Lane. Half of the Steadies finished at that point while the remainder walked on to the harbour, to Black Rock and passing the Golf Club. They cut through the car park to reach the beach and on round to the harbour. A lot of the Steadies were still there, with the kiosk doing a roaring trade. With the harbour top now full of boats, there were fewer places to sit, but everyone found somewhere to perch and enjoy the sunshine and chat.

Almost unbelievably, the group had delightful weather again the following Saturday, October 10. This time, 39 walkers assembled at Battery Gardens in the warm autumn sunshine. Kym and Brian led the Speedies on the “Up and Up” walk to the top of the cemetery. It was a long pull but the views were fantastic when they got there. The return was downhill all the way, with refreshments to look forward to in the town. Annie, backed by Chris, took the Steadies around the sea views walk. It had plenty of scenic vistas, but was much less energetic than the Speedies’ route.

On October 24, the weather was atrocious, so the walk was cancelled, a very rare event for Steps2Health.
On a dry dull Hallowe’en morning, with a nip in the air, 36 club walkers gathered at Battery Gardens, Both groups walked to the Green, then via Merlins Court and The Norton to the Butts Field. At the Croft, the groups split.
Kym, backed by Brian, led the Speedies up to Allen’s View, returning to the harbour via the Heart Attack Steps. Annie and Chris took Steadies on a shorter route down the zigzag. With the harbour top full of boats, the walkers made their way to Tudor Square for refreshments. As it was half term the town was very busy. The walkers enjoyed the decorated shop windows and costumed families, parading for Hallowe’en.
