THE Venerable Paul Mackness has outlined his ambition to make St Davids Cathedral a place that welcomes all, following his installation as Dean on Saturday, October 17.
Having previously served for nine years as Archdeacon of St Davids, Paul thanked Bishop Dorrien for entrusting the Cathedral to his care, alongside the many staff, volunteers and supporters who contribute to its life.
In his installation sermon, Paul drew inspiration from St Luke and the importance of ensuring everyone feels welcome and valued.
"I want us to be an inclusive Cathedral, a place where all are welcome and all are valued as people created in the love and image of God," he told the congregation.
Adopting "Welcoming All" as his guiding message, Paul also spoke of the Cathedral's unique ability to bring people together, encourage learning and welcome pilgrims from across Wales and beyond.
However, he acknowledged the significant financial and structural challenges facing the historic building, including major repairs to its tower, west front and St Mary's Hall, with more than £25 million required to safeguard its future.
Speaking following his installation, the Very Rev’d Paul Mackness, Dean of St Davids Cathedral, said:
"I am hugely honoured to take on the role of Dean of St Davids Cathedral. This is a truly special place, not only for those who worship here, but for the countless visitors, pilgrims and communities who have a connection with it.
"My ambition is to build on the tremendous work already taking place, ensuring that the Cathedral remains a welcoming, vibrant and inspiring place for everyone.
"There are undoubtedly challenges ahead, particularly in safeguarding this magnificent building for future generations, but I firmly believe that by working together, with faith, determination and the support of our wider community, we can achieve great things."
