ON Bank Holiday Monday, over 100 people from ages 1 to 92 gathered at Amroth Parish Hall in Summerhill to commemorate VE Day and to rededicate the WW1 Roll of Honour.
The Roll of Honour, for the people of Amroth Parish who had served in the First World War, had been previously sited in St Elidyr’s Church in Amroth. Sadly, the church closed at the end of last year.
The hall committee felt very proud when they were asked to re-home the roll. It has been cleaned and reframed and now has pride of place in the hall, together with a folder providing information on everyone mentioned on the roll.
The Roll of Honour was rededicated by Lieut Col Charles Carter, who also recounted the part his mother had played in the Second World War; she is commemorated on the sister Roll of Honour in Llanteg Village Hall.
The theme of remembrance continued when some of the senior members of the community recounted their memories of growing up during the war. Thanks go to to Pam Gibson, Jayne Hall, Mike McDonald and Sandra Wilson - who spoke on behalf of her grandmother.
Having done extensive research, India Griffiths related stories of some people who had served in World War II. There were photos and information, together with memorabilia, around the hall for people to view. This part of the proceedings was concluded with Jill Smith, India’s grandmother, reading a poem about Telpyn that had been written by India’s uncle during the war. This is also going to be displayed in the hall.
Sharon McDonald provided a VE Day quiz based on the Second World War. The children were also entertained - by Sara Turpin and Sarah Smith, who organised a series of games out on the playing field. Even the parents took part in some of the races, so a fun time was had by all!
Of course, no celebration would be complete without the obligatory tea party, and that was superbly prepared and presented by Bronwen and Sharon Watts.
It was a truly memorable afternoon.
