Elusen, Trinity College's charity committee, has been celebrating the success of two events held last week to raise money for local charities and a church college in India.

The Charity Gala Evening held at Trinity's Halliwell Centre raised £750, which will go towards the establishment of a Women's Centre at Lady Doak College in Madurai, a city in southern India. The centre will enable the college to train young women in such skills as office management, dressmaking or baking, so that they can earn a living to gain their independence and a means of financing their further education.

The Car Boot Sale held on Saturday at the college's car park raised £165 which will go into the fund to be distributed to local charities.

Elusen has already pledged its support to the Christian Lewis Charity to help equip a holiday caravan in Lydstep Haven for children who suffer from cancer and their families.

To date, Trinity staff have raised over £1,500 for charities. Last Christmas £275 was raised for the Salvation Army to distribute Christmas boxes to families living in the area, and £275 to Sight Savers International, which paid for treatment to restore the sight of 17 children in the developing world.

Elusen invites anyone with suggestions of charities or events to support to write to the chair, Rev. Mary Thorley, OBE, Head of Education Studies and Social Inclusion, Trinity College, Carmarthen.
