Corus 20 pts.

Narberth were in a whisker of crashing to their first defeat of the season away to Corus who gave the Otters a dose of their own medicine with a sterling second half performance after trailing by 13 points in the first half.

On a glorious afternoon at the Sports Ground at Margam, Narberth had threatened to take the game out of sight with some great attacking play which produced three tries to build up a 20-7 lead at half-time.

Winger Nick Jones started the scoring spree with a try after 15 minutes when he went over in the right corner having the benefit of an overlap.

The try was unconverted, as was the next three minutes later, when centre Lee Glanville touched down for his first Narberth try in the league after some clever work by outside-half Aled Davies.

After missing two conversions, Davies was on target with a long distance penalty from 45 metres, before Corus got into the game for the first time when number eight Robbie Morgan went over on the left when an overlap was created from a scrum.

The try was converted by outside-half Simon Evans, but the Otters had the last word in injury time with a great try by Wayne Williams, the flanker, who was on hand after a terrific run by winger Tom Bonnell. The fleet of foot winger had picked up the ball on the halfway line on the left to burst away, before he slipped the ball inside for Wayne Williams to go over for a try converted by Aled Davies.

The Otters appeared to be sitting pretty and during half-time there was already talk of a bonus point. It was not to be.

After three minutes, Corus showed their determination when they forced the Otters to concede a penalty and Simon Evans placed the penalty between the posts with a mammoth kick from just inside his own half.

It was quickly followed up by winger Richard Thomas who took advantage of an overlap on the right to cross for an unconverted try and then a penalty by Simon Evans after 12 minutes reduced the deficit to just five points.

A yellow card for Otters' hooker Dan Smith after 24 minutes gave Corus the breakthrough and shortly afterwards, lock Robbie Morgan went over for his second try.

The penalty kick following the infringement was belted up the left touchline by Simon Evans and from the resultant lineout, Morgan went over after good work by the Corus pack.

Simon Evans was again off target with his conversion attempt and the remaining 15 minutes of the match, together with the five minutes of injury time, proved to be an anxious wait for Otters' supporters.

The Otters were given the chance to regain the lead following a yellow card for influential fullback Jordan Skidmore and Aled Davies slotted over the penalty with some help from the posts to put the Otters back in front.

Although down to 14 men, Corus were determined to win the match or draw level and mounted a series of attacks when they were awarded a very kickable penalty in the fifth minute of injury time. It appeared that the match would end in a certain draw, but replacement back row forward Cody Rees, who took the kick, was wide of the posts so that the league leaders won their fourth consecutive game on the trot.

Narberth head coach Sean Gale was a relieved man after the match when he said: "It was a very hard game. We started well and were quite clinical and, although we made a few mistakes, we continued to play well and were leading by 20 points to seven at half-time.

"In all fairness to Corus, they were excellent in the second half and put us on the back foot at all times.

"We did not respect possession as much as we should have and our big problem is that we are giving away too many penalties.

"We are trying our best to address the problem and speaking to referees, but there are still too many infringements and it is putting us on the back foot.

"However, we have come to Corus where not many sides will win this season, so we are very pleased with the result, but not so much with the performance.

"Our outside-half kicked the goals when it counted and their outside-half failed to take his chances. Up front, flanker Wayne Williams stood out again, but we have to go back and train hard in the coming week to get things ready for our home match against Maesteg."
