An excellent example of the local emergency rescue teams working together resulted in a cliff faller being recovered safely on Wednesday night. A 22-year-old man from Haverfordwest fell approximately 10m to the base of Mother Carey's Kitchen at Lydstep and into the sea whilst climbing Rock Idle. The man managed to get out of the water and sat at the base of the cliff while his companion climbed to the top of cliff and raised the alarm. A rescue operation was then swung into action co- ordinated by Milford Haven Coastguard. Tenby and Manorbier coastguards were paged to the scene and on arrival, lowered cliffman Dai Robins down the 150-foot cliff to the casualty. A helicopter from RAF Chivenor was also tasked, while Tenby's Tamar Class lifeboat, the Haydn Miller, and the inshore craft were launched to provide illumination at the scene. A land ambulance also attended and a paramedic was also lowered down the cliff to administer pain relief to the casualty. However, due to the topography of the area and the overhanging cliff, the helicopter was unable to get into the rescue scene to winch the casualty aboard safety. Instead, the helicopter winchman was lowered onto the deck of the Haydn Miller from which he was transferred to the ILB and taken closer to the shore. Along with two ILB crew, the winchman then swam to the base of the cliff. An inflated life jacket was placed on the casualty and he was swum back to the ILB with the winchman and the inshore crewmen. From there, he was taken aboard the ALB and from the deck was winched to the helicopter and flown to Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest. It is believed he suffered a broken ankle and possible fractured foot. "This incident was an excellent example of the emergency rescue services working together," said a spokesman for HM Coastguard, who have been kept busy with a number of calls during the past week (see page 3 for more reports).
