The countdown is already underway for this year's Civic Week. The dates are July 25-31.

A busy meeting took place last week and new members were co-opted onto the committee. They were Mr. Chris Walters, Mrs. Yve Askew, Mrs. Ann Stephens and Mr. Tom Leathers. Also various sub-committees were formed to ease the length of full meetings.

The fund-raising committee, working in conjunction with the Christmas Festival Group, are to stage a duck race in May, as well as a 'Flog It'-style event around Easter. Civic Week are to stage a choir evening at St. Andrew's on April 17, with a top Welsh Male Voice Choir.

Insurance costs will be huge this year, but all carnival entries will be fully covered, and a road closure request has been made to the county council for Station Road for two hours on Carnvial Day. The committee has also decided to do away with the brochure and banners in the High Street and a financial request will be made to the Chamber of Trade, asking for assistance to erect the street bunting this year.

This year will be a very special year as Civic Week is celebrating its 40th anniversary and a host of new events will take place, including on the Sunday a Classic Car and Motorcycle Show, and on Carnival Day, a re-enactment of the American Civil War, with a Union and Confederate Camp being constructed on the Moor.

Anyone wishing to stage an event or hold a new event must contact the secretary immediately.

Talent showcase

Meanwhile, after the success of the Civic Week 'Star Turn' last year, the search for local talent will soon begin. The event renamed for this year as the 'Talent Showcase' will again be produced by Chris Walters, and the venue will be the Queen's Hall, on Friday evening of Civic Week.

Proceeds from the event will go to Civic Week, and anyone wishing more information, may contact Chris on 07813711056.
