The Deputy Mayor of Pembroke, Clr. Gareth Jones, gave a vote of thanks recently to the people and organisations who make an outstanding contribution to the community. Six individuals and two organisations received certificates at the town council's Civic Awards ceremony held at Pembroke Town Hall. Certificates of Commendation were presented to the following: Mr. Edward Harries for his service to the Tabernacle United Reformed Church and as president of Tenby and District branch of Diabetes UK Cymru, helping to raise thousands of pounds to combat Diabetes. Mrs. Margaret Phillips for her involvement over many years with various organisations and her fund-raising work for numerous good causes. Mr. Bill Carne for his work encouraging people of all ages, including disabled people, to become actively involved in sport. Bill also gives freely of his time helping to raise funds for worthwhile causes. Mr. William Matthews and Mrs. Helen Matthews for their huge contribution to the Monkton community through their involvement with environmental initiatives at Monkton Priory School and encouraging pupils to 'become involved' in the community. Pembroke Millponds Action Group for their ongoing work improving the environment of the Pembroke Millponds and creating a wildlife corridor within minutes of the town. The award was presented to Mr. John Hayes, chairman of the Pembroke Millponds Action Group. A certificate was also presented in memory of Mrs. Harriet Davies. During her lifetime, Mrs. Davies was actively involved in numerous organisations, including the Women's Land Army, Hundleton and Bosherston WI, Mother's Union, Scouting Movement, Warren Church, Pembroke Show Committee, Castlemartin Church, Cancer Research and Tenovus. Sadly, Mrs. Davies passed away a few weeks ago and the award was presented to her daughter Kathryn, in recognition of Mrs. Davies's outstanding efforts and achievements over many years. Awards of Merit were presented to the following: The Rotary Club of Pembroke - the award was presented to president John Gale for the outstanding service that the Rotary Club of Pembroke has provided to the community over the past 54 years, raising funds for international, national and local charities and their involvement with youth projects. Mrs. Val McInally, who received the award for the outstanding commitment she has given to the community through her involvement with the Pembroke Castle Brass since its formation in 1980.
