It was with much delight that Eileen Thomas, of Broadmoor, recently received ‘The Archbishop of Wales’ Certificate of Merit in Church Music’ award.
It was presented to her recently by the Archbishop himself, the Most Reverend John Davies, during an evensong service at the beautiful Brecon Cathedral.
Eileen was accompanied by an entourage of 22, including her children, various grandchildren, goddaughter and close friends, who were thrilled to witness receipt of such a deserved accolade, having served as organist of St. Jeffrey and St. Oswald Church, Jeffreyston, for over 46 years and counting!
Eileen had her first piano lesson aged just seven with her beloved tutor, the late Mrs Peggy Morgan. She went on to play and sing in local Eisteddfods. Aged 19, she returned to lessons, this time with the late Ken Hewlings, gaining grades 6, 7 and 8 and taking her theory exam. He was very disappointed to inform her that she had only achieved 97 marks out of 99!
A keen supporter of other local churches and chapels, Eileen helps out by playing when they are without an organist and dedicates her time to various local musical groups as well as St. Oswalds VA School, where she is a governor. She supported Saundersfoot Footlights as chief accompanist for over 10 years and currently enjoys playing for the Quaynotes Choir, where she has been a member for 11 years.
Eileen’s family would like to give a special mention to Father Paul Davies, who nominated her for this wonderful award and would also like to wish her a very happy birthday which she celebrated on October 15.
