If you had wanted a quiet drink at the Cresselly Arms on Wednesday night, December 17, you would have been disappointed! Arriving at the door of this popular pub, you would have been greeted with the sounds of people talking and laughing.
On opening the door, and should you have managed to squeeze inside, it would have been obvious that you had arrived on 'Christmas Pancakes' night, but what a way to start your Christmas festivities.
Looking around, you would have seen and heard a community at one, raising money for a good cause, Cancer Research. The atmosphere was wonderful and the company was even better.
Of course, the serious business, that of making pancakes, was left in the capable hands of Billy 'the chef' James, and his assistant chef Roz Beck (at least Roz was capable, Billy, after a tipple or two, was somewhat blase!).
This event, held year after year, would not be possible without the goodwill and involvement of the landlord and landlady, Maurice and Janet Cole, and their work on behalf of this charity and many others is much appreciated.
Carol Chandler again worked her magic and produced huge quantities of sublime pancake batter and Bob Page was the provider of Grand Marnier, which people are very partial to, poured liberally onto their pancakes. Thanks to Bob for his continuing generosity.
There was a raffle, with all prizes being kindly donated. The first prize was a hamper of fruit and was won by Andrew Cole, as was the second prize of a basket of pickles, which he gave back and it was subsequently auctioned by Maurice. Bob Parcell put in the highest bid of £12 and became the owner of the pickles. The third prize, a carving set, was won by Caroline Edwards, the fourth prize, a bottle of Croft sherry, was won by Fiona McCready and the fifth prize, a bottle of wine, was won by Colin Evans.
It was a marvellous night of fun and laughter and in just a few hours £435 was raised for Cancer Research. There can't be a better way of enjoying yourselves, whilst raising money for a worthwhile cause. Thank you to all the workers on the night and for all the time and effort you give willingly to events such as these.
During the previous week, a carol service was held at Burnett's Hill Chapel in Martletwy, in aid of Cancer Research. Robert Scourfield, someone else who works tirelessly in the community, co-ordinated an evening of carols and readings. A collection was taken amounting to £152 for Cancer Research.
Mince pies and Roberta's hot, spicy punch was served to complete the event.
Thanks go to Robert for making the evening so successful and to Denny and Roberta Richards, not just for this occasion, but for their care and hard work, keeping the chapel always looking at its best.
