'Out of the night that covers me
Black as the pit from pole to pole
I thank whatever Gods may be
for my unconquerable soul'.
Thus starts the first verse of 'Invictus', written by William Ernest Henley, during the 1870s.
Henley was a victim of tuberculosis of the bone, which progressed to his leg. Physicians of the day decided that the only way to save his life was to amputate below the knee.
Whilst recovering from surgery, Henley was confined to Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary, where the poem was written.
The poem became central to the 2009 movie of the same title. Nelson Mandela, who surely survived in the face of a severe test, inspires the 'unconquerable' Springboks to Rugby World Cup victory in 2005.
The poem has been set to music, by Daniel Prothero, to dramatic effect. The song is featured in the 24th annual summer concert of Côr Meibion De Cymru. Surely a highlight of the concert!
The concert, in St. David's Cathedral will take place on Saturday, August 14, at 7.30 pm.
The South Wales Male Choir has had a very busy year, with concerts in the cathedrals of York, Winchester and St. Albans.
Later this year, the choir will perform in the London Welsh Festival of Male Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall.
The choir will sing several songs, during their annual concert, which are featured in the festival.
Musical director Elaine Robins will lead the men in the maroon jackets and hopefully keep them in some sort of order! Siân Davies will once again bring the piano to life. Terry Gilmore-James will grace the organ loft with his presence!
The choir will be supported by Côr Cwmni a Newyddion Da, who are well-known to Pembrokeshire audiences.
Originally formed in 1980, these young choristers have won 49 titles at the Urdd National and the National Eisteddfodau of Wales.
The choir create an emotional, fresh and pure sound under the tutelage of Marilyn Lewis, Maenclochog. Their accompanist will be Gwenno Eynon from the Gwaun Valley.
Soprano, Jo Herco, the conductor of CMDC's Cardiff rehearsal group, will step into the limelight to add to proceedings. Jo teaches singing to all ages and has sung and hosted master classes at a number of events.
An evening of high quality music is therefore guaranteed. Book your tickets now, to avoid disappointment.
