In October 2007 the newly-formed mixed choir Lleisiau Penfro - Voices of Pembroke are going to Malta in conjunction with the twinning town arrangements between Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, and Pembroke, Malta, further extending the relationship between them. The choir is mainly drawn from The Griffon Choir and Cantorion Tyddewi and follows the success of their joint concert performances of Mozart Requiem on the 25th anniversary of Cantorion Tyddewi celebrated this year. During their week-long stay the choir will be performing in three churches, St. Winstin Valletta and Siggiewi Parish on Malta and St. Georges Basilica on Gozo, all venues carefully selected for the quality and sound of the acoustics and church organs. The choir is also delighted to be asked to sing at the garden party in the grounds of the home of His Excellency the British High Commissioner, the hope being that the President and Prime Minister of Malta will be able to attend. A visit to the Town Hall of Pembroke is also on the itinerary, meeting the Mayor, his council and other dignitaries, as well as the people of the twin town who are kindly supporting the choir in this venture. The choir of some 50 singers is being led by Brian Lavender, musical director of Cantorion, and his son Paul, an accomplished organist, is the accompanist. All monies raised on the tour are being donated to the Maltese charity, Id-Dar Tal- Providenza, a home for the physically and mentally handicapped. The choir will be getting together in the New Year and performing a concert in September 2007 before departure, details of which will be given later.
