On Saturday, 22 riders set off at 7.30 am from Cardiff to cycle to Tenby, 100 miles. The riders were mostly infrequent cyclists and some on their bikes for the first time in many years. The idea was not to race to Tenby, but to have an enjoyable, sociable ride, with the reward of the Crown Inn on arrival after about 12 hours.
The riders who took part included nine from Tenby and the rest from St. Nicholas, Bonvilston and Cardiff.
Money was being raised for Ty Hafan under the name of CARTEN 100 (Cardiff Tenby 100 Miles). Cycling shirts, which all the riders purchased as a contribution to the charity, had been generously sponsored by Admiral Insurance and Sofa Sofa. The event was organised by James Lewis, of Lewis opticians, and Peter Palmer, a registered osteopath. On the day, two support crew, Bryan Davies and Richard Jones, drove a van supplied by MCI Logistics as backup for punctures, breakdowns and drinks.
The morning was cold and a little damp, but the rain held off mostly. To help the progress, full breakfast was taken in Port Talbot, and a pub lunch in Pembrey.
Towards the end of the journey, a challenge was set for the title King of the Mountain. This was won by Dafydd Lloyd for the fastest time up a gruelling 4.5 miles continuous hill, to mercifully the Sporting Chance pub in Red Roses. His prize was to win the King of the Mountain 'vest'! which was proudly worn all evening in Tenby.
This gave the riders a chance to regroup, take refreshments and watch the exciting end to the FA Cup, before cycling the final 12 miles into Tenby, where a welcome party awaited them.
This was a very sucessful event enjoyed by all, that has so far raised over £5,000 for Ty Hafan Children's Hospice.
